right then.
after faffing about under the car (325i sport G reg) i noticed i had an oil leak,
now the thing i can't work out is the fact it seems to be coming from a sensor just above the sump (right hand side) & under the oil filter, it has a single wire coming from it & it loop's round the front of the engine & appears to go to a connector just under the inlet manifold.
the strange thing is if you move the rubber boot on the end of it oil leks straight out of it down your hand & it makes a squealching (sp?) sound when moved.
am i right in thinking this is the oil level sensor?? as when i started the engine the oil light on the dash lit up & stayed on till i turned the ignition off (straight away).
if so is it a hard job to replace? or easy? & is it safe to use the car in the mean time? checked the oil level & it was just under the full mark on the dipstick.
thanks for any help & advise folks.

It's the oil pressure switch for the dash light, not the oil level sensor (that's on the other side of the sump, by the alternator).
To get it off you'll need a deep 24mm socket; piece of cake to replace.

Thing is will it still be safe to drive the car?
I need it to go the 2.5 miles to the parts store & back again.

Well while I'm fitting the new switch I might aswell fit my VDO gauges as I've got all the parts so now's as good a time as any.

Depending on which gauges you're fitting, you ditch the switch altogether. Just make sure you have the right pressure sender if fitting an oil pressure gauge.
