Hi, wondered if anyone knows the connector that allows you to fit a hard top. I've seen a nice one for sale in Germany and was thinking of a little weekend away to pick it up. The guy selling sent me this message:
"But just for confirmation...your car needs a kind of connector to connect to the hardtop.
I am not sure how it is called in English. In German it is called Hardtopvorbereitung.
If you have ever had a hardtop mounted you should have this. But if not a special metal has to be
connected to your car to lock tight."
anyone know of the connector he is talking about?
cheers

Yep, its this, and its standard on all uk E30 convertibles, but was an extra on european models. I have then for sale at £38 pair if you dont have them, plus a hardtop if you need one. See my ad in for sale section!

this is where they are located :

Thats a Weismann hardtop, ands it has the black velour healining. Its in Leipzig, old East Germany, a fair distance away, and a bit more than a weekend for most! You're after the DeLuxe Weismann, doesn't come up too often.

because it rains less than in the uk and there was less demand for hardtops ?
That's the conclusion I've drawn. The only reason I got hardtop for my cab was I was sick of the noise when it's raining with the canvas roof up. The larger rear window is also handy when reversing.

I find it odd too. It was standard in UK cars, where we almost never bought a hardtop when new, but in Germany, where they often bought a hardtop when new, they were an extra!TPS wrote:I never knew that, I wonder why in Europe they were extra?Z3I wrote:Yep, its this, and its standard on all uk E30 convertibles, but was an extra on european models.
But BMW are not daft, they just added the price of the hardtop preparation to UK cars, and charged us the extra whether we wanted it or not!
In the 80's BMW advertised the fact that no BMW came ith a radio, and we were not charged for it. If we wanted one, then it was extra, unlike Japenese cars where it was standard, seemingly free, but it was charged for in the initial price. BMW bumped up the price in other ways...
