hi ive got a e30 touring and since ive bought the car the speedo doesnt work
when im driving the faster i go you can hear a whining noise and as i reduce speed so does the whining does that mean its come loose from the back of the dash
if so how do i take the clocks out and were do i connect it
The speedo isn't cable driven, so no whirring.
Crawl under the car and make sure the 2 wires coming from the diff aren't broken off. This is 50% likely, so fix them with some crimp connectors if they havent broken off at the moulded plug (there's usually enough slack) If it' not this it's probably the solder on the back of the circuit board within the speedo. Do a search on the forum for really well documented instructions.
All the best!
Hey man mine does the same thing gonna check those points now, the thing is ive been under the car but cant seem to work out where it is!! but u also say fuse no 10 yea?? my rev counter works but no speedo! gotta get it sorted
the diff is the big lump of metal between the rear wheels. The pulse sensor for the speedo 'plugs' into the back of it (nearest the rear of the car) and the wires come out of this. There's no other wires on the diff so you can't go wrong!
The wire from the diff is likely to be broken internally and can only be detectyed by gently pulling the original wires,
The copper wire appears to work harden by vibration from the diff, so if just repaired, is likely to fail again. Best repair is to find a scrap E30 and use the yellow headlamp plug with 500mm of wire attached, and splice this to the chopped off wire under the car.
