Alex, if it's anything like getting the same pulley off an M42 it's going to be a barsteward! In the end I had two pry bars holding the pulley still and a friend on the end of a three-foot breaker bar with a scaffold pole!

Bugger, ideally i want to fit a new chain, is there any way in holding the flywheel still?

On the M40 there is a hole in the bell housing for a peg to insert into the flywheel, I'm not sure about the M44.

I've only ever done it with the engine in situ, just with bonnet/grills and rad' removed.
