Do you have to own a scrap yard to do it? I mean, I don't think the neighbours would be too happy at the site of a shell with no wheels etc after it had been stripped down. Who would maybe give me a decent price to sell on all the bits and bobs?

Many scrapyards will pay you to collect the shell, or there are usually adverts in the back of local papers of people only too willing to do it.
Failing that, a quick chat with the local pikeys will have them all over it like a rash!

Buy a car cover if your worried it might be an eyesore. Are you looking into breaking one then?
The best way to do it is to strip its interior to a bare shell, then the engine, leaving all the panels on it, then have it up on stands and strip underneath and have the panels off, then get it on a trailer and take it scrap yard.
Keep it covered up when your not stripping it, keep everything looking tidy (No parts sprawled across your garden or tools everywhere on a daily basis) and you shouldny have any issues at all

Trick is to strip and sell all the internals before removing wheels and pannels, get it down to a totally bare rolling shell before making to look like a pile of crap.
That way there is less for people to complain about as it just looks like a car parked in the drive.

If the car has the new type red V5C, then there's no option to officially scrap it any more. You'll need to get a certificate of destruction from somewhere reputable, otherwise you'll be SORN'ing it for ever.
I understand that there has been a large increase in the number of old cars exported lately, however.

Excellent advice, thanks. I will try and work out how much I can make from selling the bits of the car, I'm getting used to the prices now and it seems like it might be a bit of fun. If my overheating issues get sorted then I'll keep her. I might have to bite the bullet and get new waterpump, rad and thermostat just to make sure.
Surpised about not being able to scrap it with new V5, the astra I scrapped a month or so ago had a section on the V5 which I sent off, must have been the old V5.

Just pull it to bits, who gives a shit what the neighbours say when someone wants your glove box plastics for top price paid!
How do you pronounce 'either'? I say 'either', but some say 'either'. Either is correct.

Ha ha, yes. There's a wee crack starting to appear there on the dash.
Yes the 1990 320i. It's not as fast as it was when I bought it either which sucks.

May just be in need of a good service, or a good chip to liven it up.

No, unfortunately not, all bog standard. The interior is tidy, alloys are pretty ugly, rear suspension makes a crunching sound when people are in the back, tool kits gone, most panels are good, no boot spoiler, no body kit. quite ordinary.

I've sent two of these red ones back to DVLA with "SCRAP" written across the front in marker pen and a covering letter saying I broke the car up and the shell was disposed of at XYZ scrapyard. No problems and a confirmation letter 2-3 weeks later.Brianmoooore wrote:If the car has the new type red V5C, then there's no option to officially scrap it any more. Try back-flushing the radiator and engine block using a hose - it may be blocked up with silt.
Then make sure it's bled properly to remove air-locks and use a decent anti-freeze.
