Is an auto box from a 1985 316 compatible with a 1991 316i ?
Schadenfreude - the German's haven't got a word for that.

The basic box is the same snd you can swap the bellhousings over. You may also have to swap the kickdown cable.

Thanks Andyboy. I thought that would be the case, just wanted confirmation before removing the 'box from the scrap vehicle

I would still put both boxes side by side and compare input shafts. Don't forget to install the converter properly - stand the box on it's tail, lower the converter in and spin it until it 'clunks' down into the oil pump ears.

The auto attached to this M10 is a 4-speed.
Having had a good root (not in the Aussie sense)around under both cars, apart the bellhousing and from possibly the input shaft, they should be compatible.
Thanks guys

Hi, I need help and guidance from those that may have done a swap from the ZF 3HP22 over to the 4HP22
I have a 1983 320i running on the 3HP22 AT and found a good working 4HP22 AT. Would I need to replace the tail shaft?
Has anyone done this conversion? It would be great if you could shed some light on what I need to look out for and additional parts I need to replace.

Anyone? Have any of you did a swap 3HP to 4HP auto gearbox for early model (1983) e30 320i coupe m20 ?
I'm currently on the ZF 3HP22 and have got myself a 4HP22 auto box (don't know which donor car it came from), but the bellhousing bolts seems to align. Just need to know what sort of modification/custom work I need to swap that 4AT box in.

This is guesswork only, but there shouldn't be any serious problems with this swap. I expect you will need a matching shorter prop. shaft as well.
Go on to one of the online ETK sites, such as RealOEM or bmwfans.info, and look up a 320i auto. saloon, without specifying a date. Look up relevant parts groups, and you'll see which bits were different on '83 cars compared too post '83 cars.
When you've identified parts that you may need, copy the part number into the search box, and you'll get an idea of which other models the parts you need were used on, which should help with sourcing them.
