i have now fitted a good flywheel and starter and still have loud squeal and starter fails to engage sometimes. on inspection off old flywheel it looks like the starter is only engaging on first few mm of the ring gear! any ideas what going on before i go mad?

Do you have the steel gasket fitted between block and gearbox?
