Link doesn't work. I think it's because the URL has been truncated. Use the url tag to repost it and it should work.

The ones that work with the torque app on Android and Apple phones are pritty good, I have one for the missus Mondeo and it works well.

As above, if you have an iOS or Android phone, try the "Torque" app in conjunction with something like an Elm 327 bluetooth dongle.

A '99 E39 isn't 'proper' OBD2, although it probably has the socket in the storage tray by the driver's right knee.
If it has a pin 15 fitted in the 20 pin round diagnostic socket under the bonnet, it's some kind of hybrid set up where some data is taken from the OBD socket and some from pin 15.
This is all something I've read and didn't understand hardly a word of. Something about k lines and l lines and something called ASD, IIRC.

Get yourself one of these CLICKY Ian if you have a laptop, its fab, even just the INPA software will be enough for what you need, just ensure you get the round pin adaptor too. It's what Ive got.

Completly off topic-ish, but does anyone know of any software that will work with the VW can bus system ?
There is NO nucleus.
