T reg (1999) would probably be alusil lined as the changeover was in 1997-98
BMW and Opel, both RWD, both german, both good fun

The little tag is under the starter motor sort of area. You can just about see it in an e36 if you lean in the engine bay far enough, but i'm not sure if its possible to see it on a 728i...

No such thing as an alusil M52. It'll be steel linered and also twin vanos.

well the 728i was indeed a twin vanos tub thing
so i've found an e36 1997 on the 'R' to go look at about 10 miles away as soon as the seller eventually picks his phone up
can anyone find a pic of what i'm looking for regards this tag ?

Just look for a small rusty tag bolted to the block under the starter. It's in the area under the starter, above the sump join and close to the bellhousing. If all you see is a pear shaped boss with a circular indentation, it's Nikasil.
Not that Nikasil is really a problem if it runs and drives okay.

well this is what i've found

so is it steel lined ??
it's done 98k with service history up to 85k and just had oil service by his son .
it sounds a sweet donk with no noises only had 3 owners inc current one ,i went for a drive and it goes really well .
i'm very tempted but it's the block thing that's got me doubting is this the one i want ,will it get bore wash in my ownership ???

Think that means it is steel linered but as Andy says if it's running right now it won't be an issue in the future.

Mine has that same steel tag. The block was replaced in 2003 at 68k with the steel linered one.

After speaking with Dan and reading the helpful replies i've just bought it ...
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251191319113? ... 1423.l2649
it's just been insured for the next 24 hours for £31 and has half a tank of jip so that's my evening taken care of
think i'll do some Diffin in Craigeeb's street later

How does the thing with the plates work ? Have you actually sold the plate and got the dosh or are they just advertising it for £700 ?

the car must be taxed and mot'd
they sell the plate for me and i clear £700 after all fees etc and they send me a new reg[v5],mot and tax disc .
the car is taxed till end of march so it should sell before it runs out.
i've sold a plate before and got £650 for E49 JAN this way .
my stihl saw is going to be very happy
