86 325i Sport - which exhaust/intake

Have a couple of questions that I would love some help/advice on -

1. Will exhaust and intake upgrade make a noticeable performance improvement?

So much I what I have read on this site almost implies the stock system is designed well enough that the improvement will be minimal.

2. Which exhaust/intake combination will provide a performance improvement without being too loud? Much prefer a subtle deep sound if possible.

'fraid you're right there!
Supersprint exhausts sound nice but aren't loud... A 6-branch will be great too if you want to fork out that much?
Intake wise, a BMC kit would be lovely too but they're not cheap! Stock airbox is better than a cheap cone filter...
