Having been messing around with a few wiring projects the last few weeks its clear i am going to need something a little more modern and hopefully cheaper than an m50 coil pack, the m50 packs are just dumb coils by all accounts with no clever electronics in the pack which should mean i can substitute them for some others.
Just beginning the search myself but thought i would ask first to save time.
They need to be;
- dumb coils just triggered by the ecu
- common as muck and with it cheap
- reliable, this is key really as replacing them regularly = not cheap.
- small as possible, pencil coils would be ideal or something intended to be self supporting.
Good solid cheap coil packs - Coil on plug

try anything Vag with a 20v turbo engine, they're usually pretty good and self supporting, or for a cheaper alternative try any age 1.4 to 2.0 renault scienc/meganne pencil coil packs, used to be able to get them for like £21+vat not sure now
I thought there was a problem with VAG coil packs. The TT eats them like sweetys. They are quite expensive too the last time i bought a set.kibble wrote:try anything Vag with a 20v turbo engine, they're usually pretty good and self supporting, or for a cheaper alternative try any age 1.4 to 2.0 renault scienc/meganne pencil coil packs, used to be able to get them for like £21+vat not sure now

Did look at the Renault pencil coils, they are cheap but are they reliable?
What are they like in a hot environment?

looking into that, seem to be denso ones so might be a good call.
Edit - seems the renault coils are one of 4 brands.
Renault used in the beginning SAGEM coils (just like ours) for their 3,0L V6 engines.
they were crap, and many of them broke.
so Renault was installing OEM Denso coils at their manufacturing plants.
Due the massive replacement of the SAGEM coils, Renault couldn't cope with the demand .
So they made arrangement with Valeo & BERU as OEM replacement coils.
I heard a story of a Renault Stealer that BERU & VaLeo are unbreakable compared with SAGEM coils.
left to right: sagem, denso, beru, valeo

I'm going to sound a bit thick now.
I take it these will be going on an M20? If so which ECU will you be using?? M50 or M20??
sorry to sound dumb but if you don't ask you don't know lol

Hi Screech ,
been watching the m20 development thread for ages in anticipation of some updates.
So heres my small contribution of ideas. Why not use some bike coils, these are from a 2001 yamaha r6 with the 5eb engine.

This engine has a compression ratio of 12.5:1 and uses carbs so they can cope with some high cylinder pressures and variable mixtures. Also they run wasted spark and rpms up to 15,500 so dwell should not be an issue.
I trial fitted these on the touring with bpr6es too and they even fit behind the heat shield.

Theyr'e made by mitsubishi too should be pretty reliable. No idea what they cost new but only a tenner a piece on ebay used.

They just use a simple two pin connector to power them and are paired on an r6.

Probably loads of other bike ones fit too but this is what I have lying around.

Interesting, the heat shield and the depth required are two of the things that make me cautious on this one, i have just aquired a set of denso renault senic ones, same as the picture above (£18 for 4 so worth a go).
Steve - Yep, rumbled, these are for an m20, thinking of using them with the m50tu ecu instead of the hulking great expensive m50 ones, i don't like the way the m50 ones fit with the m20, they always need a support plate or to be moved over the rocker cover and it looks a little odd to me.
i am hoping i can use the renault coils and a simple 8mm rod curving around to meet the mount holes in the coils and connecting to the end rocker cover studs to hold them down.
i am just about to update that thread as well.

&hairyscreech, cool I thought they might be
I'll be keeping my eye out for any updates.
just a thought, would it be possible to use the coilpacks from an omega V6??
Fingers crossed any future updates will tell us how to go about setting up to use these instead of a single coil?

Yes omega v6 packs would work in a wasted spark config, bin done before but with the full COP support of the later ecus then there really is no point going backwards.
