I've never heard of anyone offering a full engine diagnosis for that sort of money.
Of course, if you're suggesting someone takes their car to a garage for an OBD diagnostic reading, which would cost about 40-60 quid, then that's fine; you deserve to pay that sort of money to learn that E30s don't have a proper OBD system

This. And besides, it's much more fun finding a solution through the forum amongst knowledgeable friends..!willnz wrote:I am also wondering where you got the idea that e30's can be plugged in and diagnosed for all issues??The info available via the diagnostic port is about as basic as you can get.
In any case, you cant just plug a car in and take the readout as gospel, often the error displayed has to be backtracked to the actual problem, not the displayed one, this comes with experience. This is why a proper thorough diagnosis takes time and has associated costs. All you will get for 40-60 quid is a spare parts fitter pushing buttons with no clue as to what the report actually means.

if you have an e30, it is probably a neccessity to be mechanically minded, my ol mans a mech and ive learnt loads fixing up my e30 and if anything goes wrong (head gasket, suspension issue, brakes anything, i would never go to a garage and pay someone else to do anything,
with the amount of stuff ive done to mine if i took it into a garage id be completely bankrupt!
id find the issue and do it myself btw most parts that dont need replacing at that time would probably need replacing in the future as its probably gonna fail soon anyway

Because according to another thread on here all mechanics and garages are bodgers and robbers!rich318i wrote:why dont people just pay that money to just get a full diagnosis and stop guessing the problems and buying parts that are not faulty
I get phone calls all the time, along the lines of, I've changed the MAF and EGR and ECU and its no better etc..You ask them why, and they say friends etc or the internet have suggested it, by they won't pay someone to come out and diagnose it proper

If i paid 60 quid every time something went wrong on my car, id need to sell the car to fund it. Theres been maybe 4 or 5 faults recently and a diagnosis probably wouldnt have picked them up. That would have been 300 quid on a " doctors appointment " that wouldnt have helped for something i fixed myself with the help of the swear jar and some spanners. Got to remember, some of us are scumbags and cant afford that shit, so we just need to get to know our way round a toolbox, you dont need to phone the AA every time you get a flat tyrerich318i wrote:why dont people just pay that money to just get a full diagnosis and stop guessing the problems and buying parts that are not faulty

why not get a haynes manual or something similar and a multimeter and check readings, that will be much more accurate than a diagnostics reading, why pay 40-60 to find out something you can get for free on here?rich318i wrote:why dont people just pay that money to just get a full diagnosis and stop guessing the problems and buying parts that are not faulty

I take it you're referring to the 'Stomp test', alas only available on US-spec E30s, but theoretically possible to rig up on Euro-spec ones?Barx325i wrote:how about a 12p LED? a penchant for morse is freerich318i wrote:why dont people just pay that money to just get a full diagnosis and stop guessing the problems and buying parts that are not faulty
