There are two wires connected to the starter motor that terminate in ring terminals to fit a 8mm stud (13mm nut). Where, exactly, have you connected these wires?

I know there are four wires. It's only the positions of the two large ones I'm interested in.
A clear pic. would do.

Can't make out the second large terminal in that pic., but both of them should be on the same stud; the outer one.
Almost looks like there's something metallic shorting, or almost shorting the two large studs together.

the 13mm bolt closest to the actual motor has just 1 wire(the wires that comes out the motor), the red wire goes to the next 13mm bolt next to the one closest to the motor
dunno if this helps at all?

Helps considerably, and explains why your starter motor runs when the engine does.
You've connected it wrongly when you replaced the motor - the red wire goes to the outer stud as well as the large black wire.
You have the entire output of the alternator running the starter motor in an attempt at a perpetual motion machine, instead of charging the battery (which will soon go flat.)

This is a intermitent problem though it does it more so then not, but it been fine since i owned the car and only just started doing it,
also when i replaced the wires they went back in the same places as they was removed, but yea it doesnt do it all the time, thats why im wondering if that is the only problem?

Green??????tylert wrote:so the green and the red should be together on the larger outer bolt?
The only thing that should be on the large inner terminal is the strap or braid to the motor itself.

i did have a problem like this
it was inside the starter motor the plastic that holds the starter motors gears in place at the end of the motor
a piece of the plastic housing had broken off and wedged it self behind the starter gear that engages the ring gear so the starter gear couldnt slide along the shaft after the engine had fired up
so starter off and strip it to see if its the same fault as mine
good luck

When I rebuilt a starter not so long ago I made the mistake of putting a small amount of grease on the solenoid cylinder this acted like a seal and once activated the plunger was on occasion held back keeping the contacts closed, the pinion engaged and the starter turning. All lubricant needs to be removed from inside the solenoid, once I had cleaned it, it was fine, just thought I would mention it
