I've driven a few old sheds without power steering but the e30 takes the biscuit. It will make driving it a complete pain in the arse. Even at 30 mph on tight roads its a arse clinching moment if traffic comes the over way. Very very slow.

If I decided to fit power steering what would the advice be? If I was going to the effort id get a later rack (E46 etc) even if it does spoil the originality.

may as well go with an upgrade IMO e30 racks are sloww, kind of depends what the rest of the car is doing, on a 316 auto, I'd say standard :)

I wonder is my steering just in need of TLC. I definitely had no trouble steering the 320i. So either the 325 is heavier or there is something amiss.

There's a squeak of it when you turn? *ponders*

squeak could be colum related, unless it's the belt.. Have you changed the fluid etc? the pump could be shot too

It's a manual rack. So have done none of the above.

righto, sorry I thought in your original post, you were comparing your PAS to that of manual feel

what tire size are you running up front, matching treads, pressures etc? If you get the chance of raising the front end try checking the resistance. Rack could be toasted of course.. how about the UJ are the joints all ok?
