Rev counter is 'sticky' during early hours of the morning

When i drive the car in the early hours of the morning the rev counter becomes sticky jumping up and down rather than moving smoothly.

It is not intermittent as i have a hour long drive home from work and during the whole trip the rev counter is still the same.

But if i drive the car a few hours later it works fine!

Any ideas?

I had a rev counter that worked only when it wanted to,cured it by swapping the service indicator board.
