Need a bit of advice on a couple of private plates, I've been offered 2 scooters from 1982 for £45 each one has the plate HOT 772X and the other has HOT 773X
Both still have the reg number attached are they worth anything and how would I get them off the scooters and up for sale?

as far as i know you can remove any number plates, but not from agricultural vehicles, you would need to check the logbook as some have 'none transferrable reg' on the logbook, if thats good you would need to download the forms off dvla website pay the £80 fee +retention fee of £25 you will also need a valid mot

It's probably the lack of and cost of said MOT's that mean the scooters are £45!

I don't think getting them through an MOT will be a problem there ancient scooters but are totally complete and been sat in a dry garage for several years parts are inexpensive and taking an old scooter apart is like playing with Lego

No such animal as a 'private plate'!
These could,just, be 'cherished' plates,though!

You need to MOT and tax them to be able to take the plates off. A lot of hassle for prob a £250 number plate. Good to keep for yourself though!

I've found similar plates selling for well over a grand I thought they needed MOT & Tax but some people are saying otherwise I did speak to the dvla who said they can make exceptions on this but won't tell me any more until I own the bikesstaley_turbo wrote:You need to MOT and tax them to be able to take the plates off. I did the exact same on a melody as well, plate B88 0DD. Needed MOT, tax (and insurance to tax) No exceptions. Didnt cost too much, about 200 all in to get it through the mot and insure it.

DVLA sell HOT registrations, with nice number combinations from £405 upwards, so I wouldn't get too excited about the value. Selling them won't be an easy task either, the constant and extensive supply from the DVLA has put paid to anyone selling a regular number easily.
Selection of BMW hardtops available, please ask!

I already have a buyer for the plates, who wants one for his car and one for her car, offered £600 each unless i get them valued for alot more.Z3I wrote:DVLA sell HOT registrations, with nice number combinations from £405 upwards, so I wouldn't get too excited about the value. Just need to get the things off the scooters first.
I think the fact that they are a pair will increase the value slighty and make them easier to sell

Bite his hand off for £600 each. The only vaguely interesting thing about them is the HOT part. The numbers aren't of interest and the X plate adds nothing to the value. I would think you'd done well if you'd been offered £300 for the pair.

Being offered for sale or getting an offer, and then actually selling them are poles apart. If theres a genuine offer of £1200 for both, take a £300 deposit, do the work to get them on retention, then sell them on for the balance £900 and celebrate!

anyone know if you have to use one of the many companies out there to sell a reg number or can you do it privately and just involve the DVLA where necessary?

Private plates are gay, every man and his dog has them now.
Saw some fat bint cruising around in a Blue MG-ZR the other week with M55 SXY or something similar, it was mobile oxymoron
They don't do it for me, I had one about 10 years ago and afer a couple of months of owning it I thought, actually, it is rather gay... I let the retention run out and would rather spend the money no basic maintenance on my car
In answer to your question OP, I wouldn't give you a tenner for the pair of plates

How do you pronounce 'either'? I say 'either', but some say 'either'. Either is correct.

Most plates of the same nature as mine are from £600 upwards, the most expensive is over £11,000 see here......

i know they are all for sale and not sold but its gives you a clue as to its value i.e not £200
they will run when i'm done and will be selling them for a minimum of £150 eachNobby_N wrote:If the scooters run il give you 90 for the pair with the plates!

I am of the same opinion as Duke, every moron in town has a dyslexic plate, some of the plates round here are cringe worthy, one has ***BRUV
Another has P33TTY, the driver is far from anything you might associate the plate with though
I had the plate of a breaker and similar plates as close as 737 rather than 323 were/still are for sale at £1800, I put mine up for £600 and nothing, so stuck it on my track car just before the retention was about to run out

I may be wrong here but I think you may be limited to bikes as i seem to remember that you can no longer transfer motorcycle plates onto cars.

I appreciate everyone’s input on this but I was not asking if people liked private plates or not, I was simply asking if anyone knew the procedure to get the on retention and what people thought they were worthDanThe wrote:I am of the same opinion as Duke, every moron in town has a dyslexic plate, some of the plates round here are cringe worthy, one has ***BRUV

Easy, MOT and tax the bikes, go to dvla and have them put on retention, dvla will issue a new plate for the bike. Sell retention / ownership docs.

You were right once Ian, but not anymore..Ianb wrote:I may be wrong here but I think you may be limited to bikes as i seem to remember that you can no longer transfer motorcycle plates onto cars.

Motor Bikes or Motorcycles can also have private number plates transferred to and from them. The same rules apply in that you are not able to make your motor bike look younger than it actually is but you can make it look older. Once you are ready to change your motorcycle then you can transfer your numberplates across providing you follow these rules. In the past it was not possible to transfer your plates from your bike to any other vehicle than another motorbike. In the past couple of years this law has been scrapped so that now you are free to transfer your personal registration to any taxed and tested vehicles.

£600 is a small price to fool the neighbours that your £160* '10' plate Kia is actually a '12' plater that you just dropped 12 bags and a mint Interceptor on
* The price of frag is variable and can go up or down

I own a pair of consecutive TAN**M and TAN**M plates. Not worth a great deal however.
I only do three letter/one number plates. Anything else is just council.
