How come BMW engines sit at an angle?

If you think BMW engines lean over, take a look at the lotus excel, this is the angle the engine sits at in the car,

Twas a decent thread. Doesn't mention that both the M1 and certain BMW touring cars had the engine mounted upright....

I had always thought it was sonething to do with oil being gravity fed into the chambers as quick as possible for the engine
