So my M42 (currently at 155k) is pretty haggared, and I've come to the conclusion that it may work out cheaper in the long run to just swap it out for one in decent condition. Especially when it subtracts £10 a month from the insurance! (Don't ask, I don't understand it either).

So, how much would I be looking at for a tip top (standard) M42. My gearbox is fine, so without would be cheaper I guess. Rough prices please!

I have a very good one from a '95 318ti auto. £200 but you'll need to swap the sump, manifolds and loom. It's a 92'000 mile unit and as sweet as.

Unfortunately that's not standard so the insurance won't withstand.

It's the same short engine. Swap the E30 bits over and it's the same thing.

I doubt that would stick with the insurance company

Exactly what do the insurance company want?

Non standard engine is uninsurable
Standard engine swap is the same/cheaper price

What would be non standard? An M42 is an M42.

This is very true, however the insurance company would most likely say that because it is not from a model called "318iS" it's not the same. You know how difficult they are...

So an E36 318iS is not a 318iS? Despite the block and head numbers being identical, it's 'not the same engine'?

Good luck with your search.

e36 M42s are more common, cheaper and wil have less mileage on them so it's the logical choice. If your insurance company can tell the difference between an e30 M42 and an e36 M42 after ancillaries and manifolds are swapped they are doing well, they are the same engine as Andy said, same head and block numbers.

No change in capacity, and a factory fitted engine. Don't see what their issue is, have you actually asked them this or are you just assuming?

e36 318iS is M44 is it not? The M42 was in the standard 318.

As stated previously this is just assumptions, but seeing as the M44 is a 1.9 I think they may have spomething to say about it!

No. Until January 1996 the 318is and Compact Ti were 1.8 M42.

E36 318is up to 1995 is M42. '95 onwards is M44.

Buy an E36 M42, fit the E30 bits as you have to to fit it and they will not know as it's the same engine any way.

Ive been thinking of an M42 conversion from a M40. Is the wiring straight forward?
