After a couple of weeks of working through the excellent Wiki pages, I seem to be back to square one... bugger.

Car backfired and gave up the ghost so the AA gave me a flatbed lift home.

I discovered that the CPS had worn through against the pulley after the plastic protective tat had gone astray. This explained the backfiring and cutting out.

I replaced the CPS which helped but it was still not right. So I also replaced the Blue and Brown sensors, the TPS, HT leads, rotor arm and dizzy cap. I thoroughly cleaned the throttle body and ICV with carb cleaner. It started but wouldn't run without hunting and stalling.

I tightened down on all intake joints and checked for split hoses etc. All fine.

The DME and Fuel sensors were then replaced which helped alot, and I fitted a new fuel filter. It ran lovely until it had warmed up - temp needle at vertical - and then it started hunting up and down on tickover. Now it cuts out when driving and then won't start until it cools a bit even after infinite cranking and angry swearing...

I've had enough. Am I missing something blatantly obvious perhaps - FPR or fuel pump though both seem fine? Cheers.

Cheers. The fuel pump runs fine when cranking, but i'll try the coil again with a bulb in tandem and see what occurs. I have checked the coil, HT leads and plugs previously and all sparked nicely. If one or the other is out when cranking, what's the culprit?

I'm always biased towards the Blue Temp Sensor; people often change the sensor itself and never return to it thinking "oh, it's fine" without thinking that the wiring contains three different plugs between the sensor and the ECU, and a failure of any one of these will cause overfuelling, stalling and flooding. You should test it at the ECU.

The full engine troubleshoot page is here, if you've not seen it already:
