The sport evolution spoiler at the back looks like its holding on for it's life. The down force/drag is clearly tiltting it back and causing the front edges to raise up and bend the boot panel.
Is it a full width spoiler? Ie will it bolt on to an M3?

Yes, it's full width but I'll go check for flex in a while. It could be just the angle of the photo though, as I was only in 2nd gear and not going particularly fast at this point.
Last time I was out before Clay Pigeon. I can't see any flex here but will certainly investigate and look to see if additional bracing is called for?

But Mark, you don't have the gurney extended as far out, I did a quick over exposure and you can see the leading corners lift, but not as much as the previous photo.Hoobs wrote:Yes, it's full width but I'll go check for flex in a while. Doh!
Had a look today and there is some flex so we've decided to fix some tabs to underside of boot lid that will stop it. Another solution might be a twist fastener that will do the same job and not interfere with removal of the boot lid. It's a relatively easy fix either way.
Thanks for positive comment Millrat. Has to be said, your car also looks very nice.

Do you know what splitter that is or where it came from?
The splitter is a series 1 Alpina (without the brake ducting ports).
I bought it in Australia from a business who deals in Alpina parts.
No worries, I always like reading about gradual (and ultimately successful) project builds. Race car projects even more again.Hoobs wrote:

Cheers,

Finally replaced pads front & rear and took time to bed them in properly. I have to say I am mightily impressed with the Hawk pads. I'm not sure of the brand they replaced, as they came with the calipers, but the Hawk are far better. The pedal feels great and there's no squeal when hot, which was a problem I had with EBC reds. I've been looking at ducting to try and improve cooling.
On a side note, is anyone doing Retro Car Mag event at Brands in 3 weeks?

Topic moved in here
It's been a while since have posted here but have still been tinkering with old German metal. Seeing as I have a thing for E21 and a desire to enter the Cornwall Speed Championship, I figured I would build a race car from scratch. Previous cars have been built by other people and come to me as already built track cars. This time I started with a bog standard, hearing aid beige 316.
As I also had a Group 2 arch kit and fiberglass boot and bonnet tucked away, I figured it made sense to use them.

As with any serious track car, all the usual sound deadening and trim etc, was removed. The original inspiration was the old Eggenberger Group 2 car but I figured I needed a more extensive cage. I also took out the original seat mount, so that I can get myself as low as I can. Fortunately, being a non-sunroof car, there was very little rust. I did get a message to let me know how sad the previous owners were, to see the car they'd cherished ruined! Obviously I don't agree and think there are enough standard 316's out there, not to worry about one less road car.

After we painted the boot, we mounted a fuel cell and swirl pot. It's only a 12L tank (with a 2L swirl) but I'm keeping weight to a minimum and sprints and hillclimb aren't too long generally.

We took out the boot floor and rear firewall to save weight and replaced with aluminium. After that, it was paint inside, screen and poly windows.
Front screen is in. Poly sides and rear are next.

Engelmann mirrors are just about the only aftermarket ones that suit an e21.

The only problem has been the crappy arches from Pesch. They are absolutely useless, but fortunately I have a UK supplier now and they're first class.

So, I'm now at the point where I need to look at engine choice. I'm limiting power to around 200bhp, so that I can leave the OE e21 LSD & driveshafts for now. Suspension is from Gaz and brakes are Wilwood.
I'm thinking supercharged m42?

Spent the past couple of days going through the regs and am staying with m10 power as a result. Hopefully I can source a big valve head and lumpy cam to suit? I already have a set of 40's to use.

A bit more progress and apart from some minor bits of trim and a drivers door lock, the body is nearly done.

I think the Minilites look pretty cool, but Stanced UK Ltd have offered some deep dish crosspokes, that will look period correct.

The battery arrived today and only weighs a couple of Kg's.

I need to start putting a list of ''to do'' jobs together though, as I'd really like to get it finished for the Performance BMW Magazine track day at Brands Hatch on February 24th next year.
The engine I have is an e30 318i m10 and they have bigger valves as standard. I plan on using a rally profile cam from Cat Camshafts, as I figure I need more torque over outright power. I want to do some gas flowing and match the inlet ports to the manifolds, before fitting the Weber carbs. I also want the longest velocity stacks I can source, but as they're stupidly expensive, I am wondering if I could use lengths of silicon hose to extend the ones I have? I know it won't make huge power but it'll still be fun in such a light shell.
Apart from the engine, I also need to install the pedal box and sort the brakes. There are Wilwood calipers but I'm tempted to ditch the servo and mod the pedal, to get more leverage. Anyway, a few more pics.

Mark,
Drop a S14 in it. Youve been in one that goes,
so why settle for less.
Cheers,
Dave

Porn!
I would if I could afford it Dave, although I know someone with a 2 litre s14 in need of building up.
What I am doing though, is initially going to run the standard injected 1.8, but with a pair of Webers and 4 branch exhaust manifold. I also have a lightened flywheel, seeing as a new clutch will be going in anyway. The reason for this, is that we just want to get the car finished. Once it's actually driving we can start sorting the suspension geo' etc and iron out any problems. Whilst that's going on, we can start building a hot 2.0 litre m10 to eventually replace the 1.8.
The idea of having that S14 on a pair of 45's is quite an exciting one though!
Hopefully the tyres will be here tomorrow and I can get the new wheels bolted on.

A combination of being shafted for solicitors fees and a move to Cornwall have meant the E21 track car has gone to pastures new. Sad to see it go, but it'll be in good company with a brace of 2002tii race cars.
Also means I have been able secure an e30 M3 keeper, so not all bad news.
