Hoping you chaps don't mind throwing your 2 cents in -

I'm getting a metallic clunking noise when changing gear, and sometimes when accelerating. It sounds to me like the diff striking some part of the chassis.

I've done a bit of research and originally suspected it may be the subframe bushes, but I've had a mechanic mate of mine take a look and it turns out all the bushes have been renewed already.

The diff is definitely worn, but doesn't whine half as bad as some cars I've been in. Do you think its the shot diff that's making the noise, or is there another problem lurking somewhere?

My gut feeling is that the noise is something with too much play.

Any help hugely appreciated. Will update with progress.

I would check the diff mounting bolts for;
a. That they are all there
b. Tightness

:D

Then check the exhaust mountings and clearances.

As above diff mounting bolts, have seen a few unscrew them self from the top of the sub frame and fall off completely leaving strain to 2 which causes the metal on the sub frame to come away.

may also want to check the diff bush.....if it was the exhaust mounting it will make the noise most of the time not only when changing gears and accelerating.
