Just a quick one...what kind of miles can you expect to get out of an M40 with a full tank of juice ?
Went for a 4 pot as my 6 cyl E21 absolutely mauls fuel, but the 318 seems worse!! Dont know if its a case of the jumping needle that old BM's seem to have but im looking to be getting around 250 miles from full! Thats shocking!
Have'nt really experimented and run it till it stops to see for sure, but if anyone has an idea of a rough amount of miles it should be getting close to id appreciate it! Ta

I ran a 316i touring for several years.
Used just by 'er indoors for her trip to and from work(.8 of a mile)it would return 18mpg...the M20 engined car used in the same way returned 12mpg.
Best ever with the 316i was a motorway trip to Bath which saw 38mpg.
As with all cars, short trips within cities will return poor fiqures, long, motorway trips with a light foot can see remarkable returns.

OK I will let you do the conversions into litres per 100 km which most of Europe and we here in Africa use.
My 1991 318i M40 gets about 9L/100km in what is not quite open-road driving but not exactly stop-start traffic.
My 1984 323i two door was getting about 13L/100km but I was a lot younger then and had a heavier foot....and fuel was cheaper!
I had a 1994 E36 320I six cylinder 2 litre with Vanos...putting out 110Kw same as the 323i 2.3 Litre and I was getting about 10L/100km.
Basically I believe that the M40 is pretty economical considering its design and compared to the six cylinder M20/M25 E30s but a more moden motor would be more fuel efficient.
I am retired now and have to watch fuel costs and am happy to use my M40 as a daily driver as replacing it with a new economical Korean or Japanese appliance does not make economical sense.
