325 turbo cost?
Moderator: martauto
Just wondering roughly how much it would cost total to turbo a 325 engine that I already have up to a reliable 300bhp or there abouts?
Thanks luke[/list]

Diamond Schwartz black 1989 325I Sport MTech 2.
I´d say anything between 500-3500 depending on what you buy and how much work you do yourself.

I'm with gunni here it's things like if you make your own manifold get a cheap 2nd hand turbo or a decent brand new oneGunni wrote:I´d say anything between 500-3500 depending on what you buy and how much work you do yourself.
personally for a budget set up with the right stuff I think you can do it for 1500 to 2000
that's
turbo
manifold
injectors
head bolts
pipe work and plumbing
intercooler
exhaust
some thing to manage it eg megasquirt vems
then there's mapping on top of that
then you've gotta think about brake up grades to stop the thing
maybe suspension too

This sounds good, I've been looking into this for a while. What cars do the turbo, intercooler etc come from if I want second hand bits?
Also I read on another forum Gunni said that for up to 350 Bhp you could use the standard ecu with a mappable chip? Is megasquirt cheaper than vems if you do need a stand alone?
Thanks

Easy 1500 I just paid 400 for a turbo got a.manifold on the very cheap and a free intercooler ,management you are looking at 500 quid ( if anyone knows a cheaper way please let me know that's my next buy with in two weeks ) arp head studs are 200 odd quid ,then clutch pipes and bits you don't think of fab work new exhaust etc .I'm planing 2k on mine and I'm doing just about all of it myself .
my turbo is a holset hx35 ,they are from cummins diesel engines ,there is some on ebay right now at 450 with a best offer who is accepting 400 plus £20 postage BUT they are twin scroll turbo`s with means you should have a twinscroll manifold for full benefits but i dont . i am turboing a m20 and its is just as easy to turbo as the m50 only the m50 will make more power easier thanks to 12 extra valves ,i am going for 400 bhp where as people who do m50`s seem to make 450 quite easy .If you already have a m2025 in your car i would stick with that, the m50 swap while one of the easiest is a bit of a ballache as you need wires doing my nemesis (danthe does a plug in loom but thats another hundred odd quid before you start buying clio brake bits, steering bits , earboxes etc ) if you already have m50 ignore the little rant .
alot seem to use the hx35 holset thats why i went for that and they are cheap

The ebay holsets are not authentic Holsets, but not to take anything away from the ebay ones they have been known to work well.
My friend used a HX35 on a ebay turbo manifold, running standard compressoin and 1.5bar reguarly until he bent a rod. Must have been pushing about 470-500lbs torque at that point.

That's pretty good, i thought the manifold would crack first. How do you modify them to fit an rhd car?
Love the rant and I feel your pain
I've already got an m50 in the car, just not sure if I am good enough at mechanics to complete a turbo conversion, some seem to find it easy and some find it hard.

He had a LHD car.
The M20 ebay manifold doesn´t need modifiying.
I somehow thought the discussion was about m20 turbos.
For an M50 turbo I would reccomend picking up the LHD T4 top mount ebay manifold from the states. Get a T4 flanged turbo (Borg Warner S256 for instance) and then device a dual pipe downpipe to clear the steering system. The T4 top mount manifold has shown to work past 700whp.
Rest is general turbo conversion stuff.

Just to be clear my car is a RHD car, it's just that you put LHD above.
This is great info thanks for your help.

i believe them manifolds have a t3 flange ,the holsets that most people seem to use are from big diesel stuff and mainly American stuff (pickups etc) but you can get adaptor plates to t4 and evo turbos etc.
Haha I thought as much! There seems to be quite a few skyline r33 turbos on eBay that are t3 and look pretty cheap?ross2009 wrote:there shite,Pitlips wrote:Most of the eBay turbos would work as well then, or are they just crap?
most holsets are t3 flange and so are most of the manifolds

you just need to find out what size turbo you need as said the holset hx35 seems to be about the right one so if you dont want to try find one of them on ebay find out what garret turbo is the same size i know the gt35 is on the big side but then find out what uses them they will be loads as the scooby lads use that type of turbo also skylines supras etc , a breaker wont know what size turbo you want ,there is loads of build threads on google its a common job the holset i got from ebay is a genuine one they pop up second hand on there now and then too and go for cheap they seem to be a cheap turbo .

tbh a hx35 is a little on the large side there good for in the realms of 400 plussunnysr wrote:you just need to find out what size turbo you need as said the holset hx35 seems to be about the right one so if you dont want to try find one of them on ebay find out what garret turbo is the same size i know the gt35 is on the big side but then find out what uses them they will be loads as the scooby lads use that type of turbo also skylines supras etc , a breaker wont know what size turbo you want ,there is loads of build threads on google its a common job the holset i got from ebay is a genuine one they pop up second hand on there now and then too and go for cheap they seem to be a cheap turbo .
but are widely used on the m20 ive got a gt35 on mine and only just hitting about 400 bhp sunny i think your being a little ambitious with your 400 target thats alot of power
I most probably am but a boy can dream ,my last car was that power but it had 4 wheel drive sapping bhp etc I can't imagine what it would be like in a e30 but that is my aim I'm using mine for drag racing fun .Ross what injectors did you use I did read your build thread ages ago but 18 pages is a bit much to check for that .400 is my aim even if it takes more and more mods to get there .I would imagine that hx will do for me though .

Yeah that's like the one I have that's for a rhd m20 engine .I would try msg him he's had them for ages he won't sell without the turbo but I bought mine for hundred quid .
That's great value! Did you just offer him £100 or is that the price he came up with?
