My daily is an 1989 318 touring. Since I bought it, the radio does not remember presets, and if left off for more than a couple of minutes, will not remember what station it was on and go back to its factory setting. I have lived with this for over a year now, but it's time to fix it. I pulled my radio out today and found a green/red wire and a blue/red wire not connected to anything. Is one of these my problems and what do I need to do to fix it?

There are 2 power sources to the radio. constant 12v and an 12v ignition feed.
Swap them around.

its not wired "constant" , and only wired to work when ignition is on, you need both

My sony HU has constant live 12v and a 12v running from the ignition., so the radio only works when ignition on.
IF the constant 12v isnt wired then the setting on the radio are lost.

Usually, the 2 feeds on the head unit are yellow and red. Ones an ignition switched 12v the other is constant. Have u got a multi meter? It can easily be checked.

Sure your green/red isn't red/green? The permanent live to the radio memory is red/green.

I guess it is more red than green. What do I splice it into?

The red/green is the permanent live from the car, and connects to whatever wire on your radio needs a constant 12 volts +. What colour it is depends on your particular radio.

The radio is a Pioneer KE-3730. It is an old cassette, pull out style.
I have the following wires coming out of the radio.
black
green
green with red
red
white
grey with red
blue- not connected to anything
I am trying to find a diagram or manual for it somewhere. I do have a multimeter if that can be of any help.

There is definitely not an orange or yellow wire, which is what I keep finding as well. Any way to tear it apart and find out?

Most of these are colours of the BMW loom. Are you sure they aren't spliced to different colour wires closer to the radio?dooce wrote:The radio is a Pioneer KE-3730. It is an old cassette, pull out style.

Out of the above, using the BMW coding for the colour of the wires, green would be ignition live (unfused, which is a bit worrying), red/green is permanent live, red is unfused permanent live or power feed to an electric aerial, white is also unfused ignition live, grey/red is panel/instrument lights, and blue is speed controlled volume adjust.

Stick some pics up of the back of the radio and the current wired connections between car loom and radio loom.

You're going to have to tell us what all of those wires connect to at their other ends.

Unfortunately it looks to have had most of the factory loom stripped out and solid colour wires ran in place of it.

Do you have 4 working speaker when the radio works?
Thats already 8 wires then you need minimum another 3 for the radio to work, doesnt seam enough wires.
