The coolant level sensor has been a PITA since the day I bought the car.
Basically it used to come on and stay on, on the check panel and the dash check light first time you started the car. But if you turned off the ignition and started again it went out.
I took the sensor out and cleaned all the gunk and crap that had built up on it and the little metal thing on the sensor now moves freely.
That worked for about a week and now its staying on constantly. The coolant level is fine and the car never looses any coolant.
So is it a case of a new sensor or something else.

Does shorting the two wires that attach to the sensor keep the light out?
If so,I would suggest a replacement sensor.

Actually Malc, I don't know. But I'll try that later.

I've got the same thing. It's a break in the wire somewhere. A replacement sensor doesn't always fix it but test it as above. PITA

I guess the next test would be to check the wire for continuity, then try a replacement panel!toby wrote:I've got the same thing. It's a break in the wire somewhere. A replacement sensor doesn't always fix it but test it as above. PITA
I am reasonably certain that my coolant light issues with the touring stem from a gummed up sensor, but my radiator is an ex E34 item with the bloody sensor mounted at the bottom!

It's definitely in the wire next to the sensor as when I wiggle the wiring the light goes out. It looks like a previous owner fiddled with it. One day I'll fix it but it's about the only thing on the car that doesn't work.
