i have been asked about dealer plates for about 2 years now, pretty much ever since i gave up my all my spare time doing stickers. i got a request and doing the design was run of the mill for me and was 100% perfect, sadly getting a company to make the plates was impossible.....i tried various companies who on the phone (if you ever got them on the phone) said that it was possible and that they would do a good job, only for them to turn up and be really dissapointing....bubbles, poor print quality, wonky borders, poor spacing, incorrect graphic.

i was recreating an almondbury plate..here's the design...
Image

and a few of the results...

Image
(note the spacing of the border top right compared to top left as wel las the border near the bottom graphic...the original has angled cutaways and the bodge doesn't, also the line doesn't extend far enough under the phone number)

Image
Image

nice quality eh?

i also found that a lot of number plate makers use the "modern" type of kit which instead of being a thick acrylic front was just a reflective sticker on a plastic backgorund....utter junk! all the efforts got sent back.

i put out an appeal on the zone and a fella got back to me who could do this....he made a set for me and they were excellent.....good news! the bad news was he was retiring and would not make any more

after spending way too much money looking into this, i gave up and decided it was not possible and no one could be bothered or had the skill to make a decent set. i had seen a few reasonable plates made, but the perfectionist in me immediately saw errors such as the worng font, incorrect spacing...etc.

...

since then, i have got the plate bug again as i have had way too many requests to ignore. i invested in some (expensive) equipment and started having a go. i quickly found that the software that came with the kit was too restrictive so dumped it and used my own artwork package. now i could recreate any old dealer livery design and print it out.

a few issues came about where as the printer was printing onto a long strip of transparency, just being a fraction of a degree out at the beginning would mean that any borders would be wonky. as well as that, by the time the printer got to the end of the plate, it was very possible that the border on the left was nearer the edge of the plate than the border on the right. now, if you didn't care about such things, then no problem, but as far as i was concerned, it was not good enough. i can see how companies that knock loads of these out on a daily basis don't bother trying to fix these issues..

i eventually came up with my own techniques for ensuring a straight as possible edge with centred graphics and by altering the settings on the printer to the finest and highest quality, got some great results. it means using more ink but is worth it.

here is my final effort for my replacement plate...

...the original
Image
Image

....my copy
Image
Image
Image
Image

all good so far and actually better print quality and sharper lines than the original!

next step colour!

my printer setup is capable of doing colour, so here goes....a sytners nottingham plate, not exactly an exact reproduction as it is different to the original, but it what the guy wanted and looks good enough for the oem homo in me

Image

...looks ok...

Image

...oh dear! dont adjust your sets, this is what the same graphic looks like on a yellow background. so for a work around, i hand cut some white discs from sticky vinyl and placed them in between the yellow reflective layer and the graphic. this does give a small amount of "lift" at the edge, but is barely noticeable, esp when the numberplates will be viewed at about 1metre usually

Image

...the result...

Image

now we're cooking.....here's another,

the original (thanks to whoevers plate this is ;))

Image

my repro...

Image

...so, that's the progress so far. i'm capable of doing black graphics and basic shaped full colour graphics such as roundels. with other more complicated colour designs such as lettering, it will be fine on the front plate, but on the yellow plate will probably be best in just black.....i can advise on an individual basis.

it must be noted that these are show plates, much the same as german pressed plates are show plates.

costs

heres a rough guide for you, but it really depends on the complexity of the design....

all plates £38 + £5 postage...

for this you will get a front and back, straight, centred, minimum bubbles, best print quality settings possible, made with love and care by someone with a steady hand and an A-Level in art

if you're interested, drop me a pm, and if you read this far, congratulations and thanks.

It's great to see that there are still people out there who are prepared to put the time and effort in to do a top notch job.
Keep up the good work

Hi Atul

I'm after Plates for My 1994 Touring, it was supplied from BMW Park Lane, I think it has the Name at the Bottom, with the 3 Black Lines running from Left to right, can you tell me how much that will be? I don't know if any of it is in colour.

You can get that Information from any BMW dealer. Just give them the Chassis/Reg no. they can give you a build sheet.

i can't believe being from croydon has many benefits, but in this instance, it has benefitted many! just to think, if your car wasn't a croydon car, this would have never started....

thanks for all the comments, i really appreciate good feedback...it keeps me going!

pm's replied to, thanks!

so, coopers park lane...

i have seen 2 designs, one that barry (i think) posted on beemerbirds thread, and another i ave seen on my travels (i felt like an FBI officer at a mafia family gathering when i was taking photos of everyones numberplates!)...anyway, with the zone thread and my own efforts, my database is pretty big now, sorry AJ, no dave richards though...however if you want an OEM style one, i can do one set for you no problem....perhaps the same as the sytners above but saying dave richards instead with both logos to match your tax disc and rear window stickers?

B&W version
Image

colour version
Image

i reckon the colour version would look great. on the rear (yellow) plate, i can do the white backing on the BMW logo and also on the red coopers circle. i cannot do it on the wreath, but as it is meant to be green, i could just print it in blue and as we all know in print blue + yellow = green, so job's a good'un

i would go with just the words "park lane" so it matches the rear window sticker, which i can supply if you dont have it along with the tax disc holder.....unless i've already sold you some?

Image

so that would be £38 + £3 P&P. if you want to go ahead and still have my paypal details, just ping me the funds, if not, or if you need anything else, just pm me...

Barry and Matt, let me know when you are ready chaps!

no worries

wonder why the difference ? i thought it was originaly cooper park lane, then changed to just park lane some years later, which it is still known, although them pics suggest they may of put park lane originaly, then cooper, then park lane again ?

what would also be good if you could, were to be able to do the e30 style dealer key rings ?

What a shit member of staff!

Ask them to look on their view data system for vehicle spec and it will say on the top right who the selling dealer was.

It would be much appreciated as I'll order a pair of each and if you're able to do them, a Cheyne rear window dealer sticker and a tax disc holder. My touring still has the Milcars rear sticker and tax disc holder which I can upload here if need be?

I have the build sheet for mine but unfortunately it was a BMW GB car and as such I have no idea what they put the number plates at the time. Probably nothing interesting
