hi all i had done a m20b28 strocker last year and the car ran perfect until the head cracked, iv replaced the head with all the bits from the old one also iv put on a bbtb this time. after putting the engine back together and starting it there is a ticking sound coming from it which is doing my head in, could the ticking (knocking) sound be because of the bbtb or is it something else? i now its not the bottom end as it was built with all new bits last year and has only done about 2K. hopefully someone on here will have a better idea than me.

the manifold is fine, but the exhaust is blowing by the centre.

Is it a ticking or a knocking? Is it constant, get worse or faster with revs, when its hot or cold? A bit more description of the 'noise' might help those in the know diagnose the issue

Hold the engine at about 2500 RPM, and turn the ignition switch off. Does the ticking stop instantly, or continue until the engine stops turning?

could it be because of the blowing exhaust which is bad or me adding a bbtb

First thing is to check the valve clearances if you don't know how there's a great writeup in the wiki, the test Brian advised eliminates the injectors.
I said:
Can anyone suggest how to test if the boot lights are staying on with the boot shut?
