yeah did mine cos it was slipping, car just needs to be up in the air and about 3 long extentions not much room. once everything was off notice the m52(duelmass) fly wheel was fooked £350ish for a new one. so did a m20 conversion. the noise is just gearbox chatter which i would guess your fly wheel is fooked. has it started to slip?

its just gearbox chatter dont worry about it. duelmass flys are ment to stop that chatter. you had any other problems?

i know for a fact the bearings need 5mm put on the to take up the 5mm offset to the m20 clutch forks but that dont stop the chatter

If the noise disappears when the clutch is pressed imo its a gearbox problem.

What sort of noise is it? rattling, rumbling, grinding etc...

Release bearing is more like a scraping/bearing noise
Gearbox is a rattle/chatter

If you have an e30 box its very common for it to rattle, if you have ATF fluid in it try changing it for some fully synth Redline MTF oil

I do have atf in it Dan.
Will try mtf and see if it makes a diff.
The clutch is a 2l one which looked good at the time of doing the conversion .Should have just bit the bullet and fitted a new sachs at the time.

No they dont, ive done lots of conversions and rarely have a rattley box, if it does rattle its usually because its an abused old box.
My track car has a paddle clutch and the box is far from great but it doesnt rattle at all

rich318i, a zero balanced light flywheel is better than any dual mass. Your M20 flywheel is clearly scrap by the sounds of it. :chuckle:

Clutch was in good nick when i fitted it with plenty meat on it.
I'll see how far i have to put the clutch in before the noise stops.
The conversion is about 18 months old now but not done alot of miles in that time (2k tops)

Got a few things to try now and a bit more of an insite .

Cheers guys

I'll report back with my findings
