Yes I am planning on going to see Rich next week. I was contemplating taking his interior, the carpet is toast so I am going to stick my Tech 1 Charcoal/black one in.

Regards the interior, you may be right there but I think I will bring back the interior from the other car if it isn't too bad. Don't mind a bit of fraying for a temp fix, we discussed a cheap enough price 8)

What did you think to the engine by the way? Reckon it just needs tweeking on the ICV etc like you said? I think it was remarkably good really, it has obviously been thrashed in the last 5 years and is nearly 30 years old 8O

Let's see if your German friend comes up trumps with a build date

Me thinks Duksey is becoming a bit of an OEM homo! :D

Great to see it's got a future. Personally, if it was me I'd be looking at the spec sheet and trying my upmost to replicate it back onto the car. But thats me. Can understand Andys thoughts on ageing fabric though.

You deffo need to rape the other car as a priority though.

I'm not that OEM but I like stuff to be nice...

No Dan haven't driven it at all other than to move it about the yard.

Trying to persuade my mate to get the welder out ASAP so me and my bro can concentrate on getting it prepped up for paint :)

We have an update!
I got a reply from BMW and I'll condense what they've said and what I've found out:

Yours was made in Week 49 December 1982 in the same batch as the manual 323i chassis numbers up to @ VIN 7535036 . In the first week of production, more automatic 323i's were produced than manuals. The rotten henna red 323i YDG888Y (7535138) was built in week 50. Manual 323i's built with a VIN after 7535150 were built from January 3rd 1983, first day back after the Xmas factory shut down. They don't have an exact build date for yours or the cars built in December 1982 because they were built in very small batches between LHD cars but they confirm it was week 49, the first week of RHD E30 production. 323i's were built first with 320i's coming on stream in week 50 and the 316 in January 1983.

So, as far as I'm concerned, UDP260Y is, so far, the oldest E30 known to exist in the UK. :D

Not sure - could be build date or despatch date. The email from BMW said 1/3/83 build after a certain VIN number.

Just been up the yard after work, got massively side tracked but the drift seats are now toast and I rescued the seat belt lower mount rail things from my scrap IS and some other small sundries.

I realised that this car would have had a 2 into 1 OEM exhaust (according to realOEM) so I got lucky as my other E30 has a Bosal nearly new system that has just been raped :)

I have actually swapped the drift seats, harnesses, and a Nardi Steering wheel for all the welding work done for no charge by a mate. He knows it needs to be good and he is pretty good at fabricating repair pieces so a chance for me to learn and get stuck in as my welding looks like pigeon shit.

I am glad I own this thing! Thanks all for all the input/info/advice and positive comments 8)

@ Andyboy, as Dan said an email would be nice for the folder if there iis a chance of forwarding it on to me? 8)

You can get the BMW 'heritage certificate' from BMW classic for about £30 I think. Pm me your email address chap. Oldest or not, you'll not beat UBL44Y on condition! It truly is a thing of beauty. :D

Here here! :thumb:

But, again, nice one Duke for doing this. Owning the oldest known E30 in the UK is pretty cool and it's not even that bad condition wise. Obviously you have the benchmark set by hennabm but to have these two cars together at a classic show and both being Zone cars would be pretty bloody good.

Now all we need is the other rotten 323 to be sorted and Andy to get his thumb out of his arse and do something with his 'u-hum' old one :D

There's another Henna red 323i on a Y plate as well up in Scotland. If you think Mike's is good, you should see this because it's had a very expensive nut and bolt rebuild. You'd never build a better one, put it that way. It's slightly later though, an '83 build car iirc.

You've gotta really dig a car to do a full on nut and bolt rebuild to that kind of level! It's great to have some of these old cars together here though :D

Andy's comments on the previous page underline my belief that we should be celebrating 30 years of UK E30 in the summer of next year,2013.

Mike's 'UBL' is a thing of beauty, and a tribute to his skill and patience in getting this car to the level it is at today.Snag is,that to keep a car to this level is a huge commitment, means that the car becomes nothing more than an ornament!

Best of luck to the OP with this project.

If everyone felt like that Malc, and continued to use them in anger, there would be none left. Yes use them but we need to be preserving them also.

I agree with both points. We should be making a huge zone effort to celebrate the 30th anniversary.

I've just secured what I consider to be a very rare and special E30 and I don't care what others think, it'll be doing less than 1000 miles per annum and won't go out after October and before April and won't be driven in the rain on purpose. That way, It'll last as long as I will. :D

I have always used my classic cars all year round; I have found that if left for any appreciable time in the garage, brakes in particular tend to seize up, and you get rusting and corrosion due to condensation, in addition to mildewing of the steering wheel and trim.

Mind you, the garage in question is situated next to a field with trees overshadowing it, and is not dehumidified, so damp tends to get in and stay in.

I find that using them regularly and trying to keep on top of the maintenance is best for them.
