i think the biggest issue is this engine uses a CANBUS system where all the systems "talk" to each other from the gearbox to the ABS to the cylinder head/VANOS and thus its difficult to get the engine to work without these systems. Alternative is to change the engine management system to a stand alone, but given the cost and complexity for very little gain over a more simple M50/52 i do not see why you would fit this engine.
finally there is onyl the M54B30 M54B25 and M54B22
the 523/323 is actually a M52B25 engine

depends on your version of simple! I find resonant AC testing of 400kV XLPE cables child's play, and i can find my way to my own house!!
first start here:

good info on these pages, pay attention to the stickies on wiring diagrams closely if you do your own wiring (otherwise you ground a live wire when you combine the looms and could cause a fire)
also worth noting that most of the swaps to M52 engines come from E36/E34. if you have an E39 then the moutnings are differently cast into the block and thus you need to make an adaptor plate, easy enough with some basic fabrication skills.
good luck
