On the way back home yesterday my seat back collapsed at one side. Fortunately was only doing about 20mph in the lane, but it was still pretty alarming. Imagine what could have happened on the motorway.

I'm aware that there is a technical wiki regarding doing up the two screws that hold the backrest on , so started to dismantle the seat only to find:

This really is a spindly little piece of metal for what it is being asked to do. I'm amazed it has stood up to 20 years of fatigue, particularly in a 2-door where the seat gets tipped fairly regularly
Certainly doesn't look like the sort of over-engineering we are led to believe was built into German cars of this era

(I'm not asking for technical help, as I have a spare and have already rebuilt the seat - just bringing it to your attention!)
Schadenfreude - the German's haven't got a word for that.

This part fails because the screws work loose, allowing the backrest to move slightly, then the screws work looser, allowing more movement, then the bracket breaks, after giving due warning.... :D

Strange thing is, the screws were tight, so I got no warning
However, it's good to warn everyone that this can happen as a result of having a screw loose
