can anyone give me a rundown on code scanners?

ive bought one off ebay but it wants linking to a computer with xp or earlier - not something i have about

im returning that one but which have you used?

do we have obd II or is that for later cars?

im new to this plug the car in chat and i dont really know where to start.
any advice/ info would be good

M50 is regarded as obd1 and M52 is obd2, code readers are pretty crap unless you have a proper rundown of what the codes mean, the stuff that gives proper fault descriptions is much better but usually more expensive

I use the BMW INPA software on the laptop yet to check if it can read a m52 cu in an e30 chassis

cant see any reason it wouldnt work in an e30 chassis? would it not just throw loads of codes up for airbags etc?
