Camera & mounts
Moderator: martauto
As it's my birthday next month I figured I would try and persuade the mrs to buy me a camera to mount in-car.
Just wondered what the best reasonably priced options are and what mounts to choose?

Pm on its way.
I paid 180 for my gopro one as a phase out model in January. Check out the rally video few threads below. The bumps were rough enough to make my wiper stalks put the wipers on yet the picture is still great. Circuit work would be perfect. Lots of BBC channels etc use them for tv
Thanks guys.
I bit the bullet and ordered a GoPro which should arrive Monday.
Where is the best place to mount it? Do they have a remote start button or auto start?

GoPro are releasing a wifi backpack for the Hero2 in a couple of months which means you can control it from your iphone/ipad. It also has a remote so that you can control up to 50 cameras at the same time. I have one pre-ordered and will let you know how I get on!
I suggest you set it up for 1 button start, which just means a single button push and it is running.

I was reading about the wi-fi remote this morning and almost pre-ordered myself. Looks like a nice bit of kit. I'm also going to try Harry's trackday app for the i-phone.

Just bought the cage mount so I have an alternative to the suction one.
Booked Brands on 20th so hope to make use of it then.

Been messing with mount positions. Also got a cage mount but it's not adjustable enough to be able to get the camera level when fitted on the diagonal.

If you are using it internally/in the dry I recommend using one of these:

Coupled with an external microphone, makes the audio usable

Yeah, I have a skeleton case. I've ordered an external mic but would it be better mounted inside the car or by the exhaust tail-pipe with some foam protection from wind noise?

I have always mounted my GoPro Hero2 in the car, on a sunvisor replacement mount, using the standard case and using the internal microphone.
The sounds is perfect, roof up or down in my opinion. The wind supression software in the camera must be very good.
An example, in my MX5 rather than my E30 though. This session was roof down.

The vendor's website link shows you the mount - http://www.jassperformance.com/#_interior_2_3 . The hole spacing is for an MX5, 36mm centre to centre. Sorry, but I don't have my E30 here to compare and see if it would work.Hoobs wrote:Any pics of the mount please Martin?

Thanks for that Martin.
I'm not sure if my cage might obscure the visor mount holes anyway? If not, it might be a good solution and easy enough to make or modify an MX5 one.

Mark,
If you want the best possible 'effect' of going at speed, you should mount the camera on the towing eye bolt hole, its a perfect vantage point and will offer the viewer the best possible sense of speed

I'll let you know this week, when hopefully my pre order will arrive
I am just about to order a second back pack as I now have 2 cameras so should be able to get some good footage!
If you want decent audio definately use an external microphone, I took a number of videos of F1s and 12Cs in Italy recently and whilst the visuals look stunning, the audio is rubbish

Would you place the mic near the exhaust tailpipe? I think that's what they did when the filmed the Mercedes Black Edition for Top Gear.

Double checked this morning and it should be with me tomorrow. Apparently only 2000 were imported to the UK of this initial batch, estimates are that 1700 of them were on pre order or sold over the weekend and so there is now little stock left available!
The next batch is not being delivered until the end of July beginning of August!
Also an annoying point is that they are only selling the combo kit at the moment and not just the backpack, I have 2 cameras and don't want to buy 2 remotes!

One remote controls 50 gopro cameras.
You need a decent camera and a decent mic to be able to get good audio.
You could use a decent audio recorder and then sync video and audio in post.
If you get a cheap mic from maplins cover it in a rag (depending how much gain control the gopro has you might not need it).

exactly, that's why I want only 1 remote and a backpack for each camera and not 2 remotes!

Yes fcp/avid/premier pro are the tools of choice.

I'm dreading learning how to use editing software. I might have to ask one of my kids.
Well I'm told that I've got a wireless remote being despatched tomorrow. Supplier is waiting on his own delivery so might even send today, if they get it before 3pm.
I'm not going to bother with an external mic on Wednesday. Mainly because I just don't want to start drilling the casing to plug it in. Surely they sell a case with the holes in already?

Mark - yup, called the skeleton case.
Andrew - quite possibly it is free these days, had my copy for years. Unfortunately I have better things to do with my time than learn a new bit of software for a couple of videos per year. Namely finishing my sodding e30!

FCP is very easy to learn, you could learn the very basics for a neat cut in less than a few hours.
