hi im new to the board,
ive just passed my test and am currently driving a fiesta  and i love the E30. I was just wondering is it viable for me to get a 316i for my second car, and will insurance companies actually insure me? if so anyone have a rough guide on how much third party on it would be? Cheers.

Just try getting some qoutes of the internet www.confused.com is a good start. You should be able to get insured on it, but you may as well get rid of the fiesta and have the E30 as your main car so your not paying out for two cars.

Good luck.

dude, fiestys are not the way forward!!!

get a 316i-as long as your postcode is ok shouldnt be much over 600 for 3pft (third party fire and theft)

confused.com is a good place to start, and very reliable. Also try www.elephant.co.uk -their 10 month bonus accelerator policy is a good thing-gets you a years no claims in 10 months.
they also seem to be stupidly cheap for BMW's

Hell, if you get decent quotes get yourself a sixpot (you'll thank me :D )

Endsliegh Insurance used to be a good place for new drivers.

I know Tesco's can be cheap.

It really depends tho what you mean 'cheap'. After having my old car side swiped I really would recommend paying a little bit more and going fully comp...it's just not worth the hassle. At least make sure you get good legal cover regardless. Through no fault of mine, it has taken almost six months to get everything sorted out.

If you are going to use it as a second car, then consider getting low milage allowance. Ask the insurance company to tailor the policy to your needs. I know it's a pain but it is really worth while taking your time as this is one of the main costs associated with buying a car!

I really hope you buy a BMW, especially a E30. Learning to drive in a RWD car will make you a better driver in the future...I promise it's a lot more fun as well!

Good luck...and well done for passing your test... :thumb:

cheers guys for the advice, i just did a qoute on elephant.co.uk and the third party quote came up as Ԛ£3200, f**K thats expensive, choosing a standard 316i coupe, 89 plate. Maybe its so expensive because im 17! the bmw will be replacing my fiesta so i wont be insuring two cars.

Another question i have, is it possible to fit M-tech kits to the 316? and how much should i expect to pay for a decent example thats well looked after? cheers

confused.com will give you a better idea as they search through loads, i was getting qoutes that varied by about Ԛ£5000  .

The M-Tech kit should fit any car(different side parts for 4&2 doors though) i reckon, although i could be wrong, i'm no expert.

Keep trying, you know it makes sense buying an E30

privilege is wiered, it's great for some, like me, and can get quotes for over 500 quid less than any where else and other people, like yourself, can't get anywhere near what they can from other companies, strange that one, never known a company to give such varied results

I remember a whil back people were saying elephant got cheaper when you added people as named driver.

Insurance always seems totally random to me.

hmm-LHD is ok on the continent, but RHD is what i know and love.

scariest moment in a LHD car is either a ford fiesta in oslo at 7am, with the snow pi$$ing down,

or a 225bhp Audi TT LHD-had it going supersideways, then realised there was a hell of a lot more car on the right hand side than usual 8O

Hi

Recently turned 21 first car 1800 E30 316 '87. Went for elephant after a lot of a lot of research!!! Ԛ£850 with my dad insured on aswell. My mum made it go up cos she claimed but if you can get 2 or 3 old people then it goes down (every little helps) :D

If you can pay it off in one go you save a bit more ( i couldnt :-x )

Postcode did not make too much difference to me but may be other companies take more notice.

What i did find out is that you dont end up paying much more for the bigger engines / newer models. I was even tempted on an old 7 series!!

Hope thats some use to ya

Cheers

yeh that quote was quite steep to say the least, im living near brighton so maybe its partly due to that???

these websites do f**k you around a bit, can they give you a qoute over the phone?

and also i do plan to modify it, eg. alpina alloys, m tec kit, lowering etc will this have a huge effect on rasing the insurance price further?

Mods can make a huge difference. -It depends if you want the parts covered or not. The law might say differently but err. Lets leave that one there!
