When checking with a view to replacing the rear section of the fitted 2-part system I have discovered that there is a metal dustshield fitted above the rear silencer which is loose and rattling.
It appears that the rearward section of the shield may have been held in place by a nut screwed onto a stud which was either welded to screwed into the rear chassis leg extension. I say "appears" since corrosion has destroyed most of its detail and I cannot find any listing on the Real OEM.
Can anyone help with what the fitting originally was so I can get the bits to do a proper job?

The stud that the nut was screwed onto was the same as the coarse threaded studs found all over the car that 10mm plastics nuts screw onto. The nuts that hold the heat shield however are pressed out of thin steel, with the bit that actually screws onto the stud being similar to the screw fixing part of a spire clip.
These studs are available from BMW for welding on, but in most cases it's far easier to drill right through the panel and use a small conventional nut and bolt.
