Has anybody encountered this before? if so how did you get the half a key out of the barrel?

Cheers

is it in a door lock? is the door locked or unlocked? has the key broken half way down or at the end?

the more info you give the more chance people will come up with a solution.
p.s. got a spare lock set if you resort to drilling it

Happened to a me couple years ago during winter due to having a poor quality key copy.

I just left it in there and locked from passenger door.

Most probably need to pop the barrel out and open it out. Pop the door card off and prize off the C shape clip with a long screwdriver through a little hole to release it.

Or you could try and put a flat head in there and turn it while pulling the handle up.

Picking it out with lock picking tools, I tried this and could see the snapped end but just couldn't pull it out enough.

I would go to BMW and buy a lock repair kit.
This comes in a bag with all the bits you need to build up a new barrel, costs about £20.

Then if that's your only key that's in that lock, slice the lock barrel at right angles to the key blade to extract the remains, given reasonable luck a key cutter can copy the blade.

In the unlikely event of your E30 still having the original lock/key,your local stealer can supply a new key against your VIN number.

I''ve got 3 other keys that are in one piece. 2 are brand new and one is the old one. i@m gonna keep picking at it and if all else fails i'm gonna resort to glue :)
