evening all
this weekend i replaced the camshaft, rockers, thrust pads and hydraulic lifters on my 318 m40 engine. this sorted out the misfire at 4000 rmp and the tapping noise stopped for about a day. but now its back but sounds slightly different. i let the lifters soak in oil over night and cleaned out the oil pipe that goes on top of the camshaft. ive been told that i could be the exhaust manifold gasket?? can anyone can help me out? thanks guys

it may help if you describe the sound.

is it a ticking, squeeling, whining/clunking/rattling etc
does it change when car is warm or cold
is it louder then the engine at idle
does it appear at a certain revs?

have you tried the long screwdriver stethoscpoe method to localise the location of the sound?

id say ticking, its not there at all when the engine is cold but gets louder when as it warms then stays no matter what revs.
i havnt tried it yet but will look into it at more depth when i get a chance.
thanks

that is normally the sign of an exhaust gasket, when it warms up the exhaust expands and thus the gasket has more work to do to sela the exhaust against the head, thus is ticks more when warm.

if it is only a light ticking then just monitor it for a week or so and see it it get worse
