Hi Guys, hoping some of you might be able to help......... Have recently bought a M30 converted E30 2.0 and am trying to iron out some ...er interesting faults !!! I managed to trace the crap running to loads of air leaks (now sorted) and a TPS and have set that up as per Bentley. Car now idles fine but as rich as hell. No apparant running faults just rich......about 6-7% at idle and only comes down a tad with throttle. Unfortunately I don't know the history of the car but got in touch with the guy who built most of it for someone. I think That someone then ran out of money and threw the rest together and it shows !! My question is this....... can anyone identify this chip and year of ECU? I am wandering if it needs a lambda sensor ? Does anyone know if this ECU/chip combo needs a lambda ?
Thanks in advance. Gus

Thanks mate...... I guessed as much and already have  I was told it came from a Hartge H5 with correct cam and a "chip" .It does go like stink and revswell past red line so if I can just get this rich running sorted .....on to the next stage :)

Would just get a probe stuck up its pipe and adjust the afm accordingly for now.

The chip label would suggest it is a Brodie Brittain Racing (BBR) chip, dated 26/8/1994.

It shouldn't need a lambda sensor, but it could probably be optionally fitted, since the 179 ECU is a later Motronic 1.3.

Hey Maurice, really apreiciate your input...... any ideas on why the Co is so high 6-7% :? engine running fine ......have sorted TPS and set up, no air leaks, AFM checks out but doesn't adjust on the screw ? I was wandering whether being the laster ECU it needs the input of a Lambda and the monkeys who "finished" it off just left it off ? .......Hmmm spose it should have a sensor plug somewhere then ? all the best Gus

Have you tried the correct ECU initialisation procedure? On first fitting it, or on reconnecting the battery, you should let the engine idle for at least 10 minutes to enable base idle settings to be learnt, then switch off, then take it for a drive throughout the rev range.

So, it may be worth disconnecting either the ECU or battery and leaving it disconnected for at least an hour to reset it, then try the above.

The Lambda plug, if fitted, is normally in the engine bay, near the bulkhead above the exhaust manifold.
