You only can run GRP with side impact bars, I know i guy with these and he used expanding foam to fill them, for a bit more impact resisitance.

I got big side impact bars fitted. Big old cage in my car. BMW challenge cage. Don't know if your allowed plastic doors for rallying but to be fair the doors are quite likely to have a knock and a rally car has to be strong. Need to try harder now as car nearly there. Fitting e36 box next week so 6500 rpm in 5th =102mph. Should be quick through the gears then though
Sunroof blank came today. I never realised just how heavy the OE sunroof actually is!
I'm really pleased to be able to lose so much weight, from so high up.
I'm off to Cornwall tomorrow or Sunday for 3 weeks and there's a hillclimb near Launceston that am going to. If I'd planned it better I could have entered the e30.

Is this a bolt in, or a bond in?

I see, I keep bugging Martin to make a CF bolt in! You're quote right the stock panel is rather heavy.
Took my car for a spin today after major upgrades, simply savage, I cannot wait for funds so I can crack one with the last few bits to be completed and then a few shake down days this summer

It's not that easy, your base settings will depend on spring rates, arb rates and ride height.
I run -2.5° F and -1.25° R camber, 0° toe F and -1.25° R toe.

I have standard 325 ARB (afaik) and spring rates are 600lb F & 295lb R. I think ride height might have to come up a tiny bit, now splitter i going on, as need to be able to clear speed humps. I'm hoping to get a towbar on my old e12 though, so may be able to bring it back down again once I start using a trailer.

I'm thinking of fitting a removable steering wheel to help with getting in and out of the car (I have a slight physical disability) as it would then mean I could fit door bars when I upgrade the cage. Has anyone else fitted one and are there any considerations that I need to make first?
Also, is there any downside, to removing the boot floor & spare wheel well, and replacing with alloy sheet?
Finally, because I use the car for sprint events, I need tyres that work from cold. I know slicks would be no use without time to get hot so currently use 888's. Does anyone have experience of any softer compounds that might be worth trying?

Mark, there are a few different types of steering wheel hubs, weld on and bolt on, the weld-ons seem to have a lower over all profile and pretty much allow the steering wheel to be fitted in the same offset, the good bolt on ones add a slight amount to the wheel and the cheap ones add a lot more.
I have only ever looked at them in catalogues, never actually fitted one.
The only downside to removing the rear spare wheel well is aerodynamics and storage, if you cut the panel out you will have a lot of air damming up lifting the rear, to do it properly you would also have to cut the rear valance as a relief for the air travelling from the front of the car, the other option is of course to flat floor the rear and then you will have the best of eveyrthing, weight reduction and efficient aero
(this is what im working on).
Generally speaking the best way to get heat in to the tyres is from heated tyre bags or from the use of your brakes, im running a very hard compound and it takes a good few laps before they start working like a slick. If you are not able to do any of the above then your only option is to drive on the tyres before the stage and go for the softest compound in your tyre choice.

Thanks. I'll start having a look around to see what's available as price will be a consideration but I don't want to use some old bit of tat.
I was already planning to take some metal out of the rear valance as I've seen the effect it can have on cars running quarter miles. I think a flat floor is definitely the way to go eventually.
With tyres, the problem is that sprints usually mean a lot of hanging around between runs. Some venues allow spinning the rears, prior to taking the start line, but I do wonder just how effective that really is on an old 3 series as opposed to a pro fuel dragster? Probably has more of a psychological effect than anything else and gives spectators something to see. The reality is that I will simply have to find the softest compound 195 or 205/50x15's that I can. There's a chap, who's often in my class, and runs a really nice Vauxhall Viva that's has all the period mods including some big, sticky Avon slicks. He's spun out at pretty much every event though, simply because they never get a chance to get warm!
I'm hoping he keeps using them this year.

Well the OE sunroof is finally out (bloody heavy!) and the fiberglass one is bonded into place. The cage had to come out, to give room to work, and we then realised just how poorly fitted it was by the previous owner. It's going to be welded back in with strengthening plates beneath the mounts. We are also fitting door bars in an effort to make the whole thing more rigid. I had planned to sell the e30 eventually but now we're building it properly I intend keeping it.
Thanks to the guys at www.pristinebodyworks.co.uk and I'll get them to forward me some photos.

Would be interesting to see the sunroof panel and tray weighed
I have one of these:

http://www.driftworks.com/shop/driftwor ... pacer.html
I find it very solid and without any movement (other than circular!), which is much better than a cheapo one I bought of eBay previously. However, it does move the wheel further back. You can see in the photo above how much - I'd guess at about 5cm *? I had to move the seat further back which initially put my right-side vision directly in-line with the B-pillar. OK on track but a right PitA on the road
I compromised and moved the seat one hole further forward and raised the back slightly, which also had the effect of move the seat-back slightly further forward giving me a slightly more upright position. Of course, being attached to an angled column, it also raises the wheel somewhat. I was intending to lower the column, but decided to give it a try with the slightly raised wheel. I did a day at Rockingham (after driving there and back from Toonside), then onto the ferry to Hamsterjam and a drive to and from The Ring - along with 2 days on the VLN circuit. By the end of all that, I was quite comfortable with the slightly higher wheel!
If you do need to lower the column, you will need to be brutal with the bolts holding the column to the dash (unless that is coming out with your dashboard removal?). The bolts have had their heads removed ("Off with their heads" I head Hermann cry!) so cold chisel, angle grinder or whatever is needed. But as I said, I decided not to bother. Here's a pic of mine with the boss fitted but the wheel removed:

* Doh! If I'd read the link I posted, I would have known it is 60mm closer (so my guesstimate wasn't too far out).

Sunroof & dash totalled 22kgs. A bit of that will go back in with cage mounts, welding & digital dash.redcar wrote: Would be interesting to see the sunroof panel and tray weighed
Steering wheel mount looks ideal - thanks.
Working on lightening doors tomorrow and taking metal from the rear valance & boot floor to clean up air flow.

Do you have any pictures of it fitted, from below and from above?
I think that Toyo make the R888 in a soft compound, as well as the harder (GG?) compound commonly used for circuit racing & trackdays. Not sure about availability, though.Hoobs wrote:Thanks. In general terms, it sounds like your man in his Viva has over tyred the car, insofar as he cant get heat into the tyres over the course of 1 lap (or run). Either go softer, or smaller so as to work the tyres harder to ge the temps up. Once you're in the ballpark, play with pressures to fine tune.

The door cards I made up. They weigh almost nothing to be honest. Took about 10 minutes to make with a Stanley knife. We use the card in work to cover pallets to protect parts.milescook wrote:Rix has a removable steering wheel boss adapter he might have some top tips.

Where in South Wales are you? I'm hoping to head that way in a few weeks, maybe you could do a couple for me for some beer tokens?
