Hi I didn't really want to start another thread but I've seen so many different versions of this now I'm so confused.

I'm finally getting my e30 next week! And I'm looking into suspensin. I've decided to go with coilovers purely because of the adjustable ride hide (I won't be happy if the lowering springs weren't how I wanted them).

So I've been looking and have seen that welding is involved? Is this just for the rear if you wanted coilovers for the rear rather than separate springs and shocks? Also any recommendations on a reasonable priced coilover set?

Thanks guys

welding coilovers never seen that one
you dont need to weld anything even if you do put coilovers on the rear

the best cheapest set are prob gaz there around the 600 mark look for the user rpm they sell and supply them but they will also need a set from you to start with on exchange basis got to be the 51mm strut too

im sure jimmy can help you out ive got a set of them on my car im very happy with them do exactly what i need them to do

Some sets do necessitate welding and cutting. :D

Proper coil overs require you to weld a collar to the e30 stub axle, this only applies to the fronts. Cheap coilovers will be "insert dampers" and they will just replace you existing spring and shock.

The rears are rarely coilovers, except high end like Gaz, basically the clearance is very small to fit a coil over at the rear hence why few companies do it.

Here you can see my set, the silver sleeve on the coilovers is what i welded to my stub axle after cutting the old one off. You can also see the rear shock and spring/height adjuster.

Here you see the assembled set up, the silver sleeve is painted black, and you can see the weld about 1 inch above the stub axle. The sleeve is threaded as is the coil over, so once welded i simply screw the coilover in and lock it off. Height is adjusted by the spring height nuts.
