Been neglecting my e30 for over a year now with almost no work happening. Figured if I start a build thread on here then it might encourage me!

This is it when I first bought it:

Image

Genuine sport, rot free with 80k .

Unfortunately the top hose blew after a couple weeks of ownership. Wasn't hanging around when it went and didn't notice till it was too late. Head was so warped you could see it without a straight edge 8O

Luckily for me, martinpallot (another zoner) is local to me and was selling his m50 conversion.

m20 with head stripped and bonnet off ready:

Bulkhead was thouroughly inspected at this point. All was perfect 8)

The next day, what must be the most ghetto engine swap in zone history started:

Image

With no balance bar, I love tapped the hook either way along the chains links with a hammer to achieve the desired angle of the dangle. Combined with an engine crane that needed constant pumping to stay up (bit like me) and a leak patched up with masking tape :P safety first!

Image

In case you are wondering, no, you can't get an m50 in with the rad attached:

Image

Image

I used very expensive (for too fooking blocks of rubber) AKG engine mounts. To be honest, I am not impressed with the fitment considering they are made purposefully for an m50 into an e30. I just couldn't get them to line up also once fitted, the threaded rod does not protrude enough for my liking. Engine is never going to go anywhere, but I would like at least a thread showing rather than flush with the top of the nut. Time for some spurious engineering:

Image

In the end, engine had to be lifted, mounts loosened from underneath, tilted so the studs lined up with the holes in the mounts and slowly lowered back down again. Obviously it wasn't that easy:

Image

There are a worrying amount of pictures of me standing on my engine!

All glass and excess wiring came out and a full hunt for rust commenced. Not a patch :)

Image

Image

Image

All excess brackets were removed, ground back and primed:

Image

KTM MX goggles, the latest in safety.

And there it sat for pretty much 2 years. I have done the odd thing here and there, but money has been tight (trainee site manager) and bits are expensive. But I have collected most the bits I need and I am ready to start again.

Me trying to be arty last night with my iPhone:

Had a go at skinning the boot:

If you are interested it saved about 4kg. But not worth the hassle. I'll be buying a fibreglass one. (PM me if you have one for sale).

Someone had welded up the spoiler holes for some unknown reason in the past along with a few other dodgy repairs. Ground these back to bare metal but decided fibreglass will be the best way forward:

Picked up these goodies on the weekend. New fuel lines (welding damaged the originals), clips for them, new conical washers for the exhaust, new nuts and bolts for the centre section of the exhaust, throttle cable and battery cable form the positive to the starter/alternator. £127

My co-driver:

So time for a big push, next weekend weather permitting it is being pushed out the garage for a massive clean up of the engine bay, interior and exterior, get the cage fitted so all the mounts can be drilled and bleed the brakes. Going for interior paint a week or so after.

Thanks for reading, I'll be updating this as much as possible!

Little more progress over the weekend.

Wrapped a load of wires with new cloth automotive electrical tape and bought P clips to mount them securely and tidily.

Pushed the car out the garage for the first time in 2 years. What an occasion :)

And started test fitting the cage:

Nightmare of a job. Dreading putting it in once the interior has fresh paint 8O

Offered up the seat and drilled the holes in the seat mounts:

That wheel is going to have to go. Forgotten how small it was.

Roughly offered up the hydraulic handbrake just to get a feel for lay out. Will be welding on a boxing to mount this as the transmission tunnel is too small. If anyone has pics of how they have mounted theirs it would be appreciated:

Image

You can see the wrapped wiring in the back ground and the disgusting mess that I am slowly picking through.

Got a load of other stuff done. Mainly removing of the sound proofing in the engine bay. Really wish I had done this when I had the engine out, I even had it off to inspect the bulk head but wasn't going as flat out on weight reduction as I am now. Fitted a new y cable from the +ve point to the starter and alternator and refitted the inlet manifold. Also removed my old exhaust manifolds which are a 2 into 1 ready for danthe's manifolds which will mate up to my scorpion system.

About 3 weeks till the interior gets painted so will just be finishing off the cage install and tidying up the inside and welding in brackets for the harness'.

It's on r888's, they do look small though!

Pedal assembly isn't bolted in place at the moment, I'm about 5'11".

Cheers though, it's coming together. Spending a lot of time redoing other peoples "work" though as is often the case

Will be entered into the local hill climb and sprints, not sure how competitive I'll be mind

Hoping to catch at least 1 this year but finding time at the moment to finish it is the hard bit with work commitments.

Are yours quite old? Apparently they changed the design to use shorter studs as numpties were complaining they couldn't get a socket over them.

I'm sure they will perform admirably though. I suppose a bit of money spent on mounts is better than mounts failing on track

Don't worry about being competitive, just have fun!

Tell me about it. I've only managed 1 out of 4 meetings so far this season - too much work to do on the car, not enough time to do it

Not massively old. The studs were shorter than I'd like, but the fit was spot on. They functioned brilliantly also.

I miss building turds.. :(

That's the idea! Don't plan on selling the car so the plan is to build a nice competitive/fun car as time go by.

Good fun isn't it....most of the time!

Have 10 days off work at the start of June. Plan on getting to the ring, the ferry is all booked up as an incentive :)
