I saw an article about a similar machine in my brother's Bodyshop magazine, but it was for cleaning diesel engines.

I'm lead to believe this sort of cleaner can do more harm than good to older engines, as the build up of rot can actually be blocking problems.

I may be wrong, but a good starting point ofr conversation...

no.

the carbon canister fitted to cars is an emission control device. it collects fuel vapours from the fuel tank and either vents them into the engine inlet, or filters them through the carbon inside it.

I entered the comp twice and 1 free haha

But the cleansing did look good and he did say it was just being introduced as we speak. Made no sense to me but would like to see results on an e30.

it looked like this, you basicly connect it to the fuel inlet, block off the return line, put 2 canisters in the top of the machine and start your car and leave it to tickover for an hour, it fuels the engine from the canisters with the correct fuel pressure (and not the car fuel tank), and is like the fuel additives sort of thing that clean the engine and flush it right through , the results it gave were excellent, he said it was new technology and not in every garage yet but is currently being rolled out everywhere

wonder if they can be used on e30s or if anyones tried

So it only cleans the fuel system? Or am I missing something? If that's the case pull the injectors out and get them cleaned is going to offer far better/any results.

Got to remember they will have a motive for saying its the next best thing. No doubt got a fat cheque for it

it cleans the whole engine and flushes it through, it runs the engine from the canisters bypassing the fuel tank, runs through for an hour

it showed the emissions and carbon it was pumping out before, then after, it was a massive difference

all the engine gets coked up with deposits etc etc , so imagine on a 20/25 year old e30 what it might do and how much crap is in there

i think a lot of people would be surprised how little crap and buildup there can be in an engine if it has been looked after reasonably well, even 20+yr old, high mileage ones.

pint of water and vacuum tube connected to vacuum take off on throttle body. Similar effect and quicker.

"You'd be surprised how clean a properly maintained engine is " true back in the day or if you live out of town but given today's speed limits and " non driving " micra drivers we have to sit behind coupled with poor petrol and the fact that people no longer seem to perform the "Italian decoke " they may be onto something here. Who else thinks their car runs better after a long fast run ( and a few B roads maxing each gear ) I know my Alfa Daily hack does

but surley 2 canisters , 1 i think was some sort of real pure fuel, the other some sort of cleaning deposit remover stuff..running through for an hour at correct pressure through a specialy designed machine that measures everything, would do a much better job

So it's an injector cleaner? It's not going to be cleaning the whole engine is it as unless there is something badly wrong fuel doesn't make it's way below the piston rings.

No, I mean "slippery snakes". You said "snake oil". I've no wish to be hauled into court by the makers of this stuff!
Modern fuels have additives that keep the engine top end clean anyway, although I suppose it could have some effect on gummed up EGR valves.
Stew72 is quite correct. If you want to 'clean' your top end, water does the job perfectly well.

lol that went right over your head :D

So you would be happy running something corrosive enough through your cars fuel system that it cleans the engine?

^ Presumably they must be using some sort of probably acidic chemical that strips varnish and carbon deposits off the injectors and valves, etc.

There may indeed be some knock-on after-effect on fuel hoses, O-ring seals, etc., so probably best not to do it too often.

Besides, it's apparently actually advantageous to have some carbon build-up on piston rings as it improves sealing of the combustion chambers giving greater thermal efficiency.

But, the machine may well work as claimed, so until further results come in from more widespread use of it, anything said is conjecture.

On older cars, the addition of Ethanol to petrol is likely to be of more concern, as some have said it rots fuel pipes, etc.

Is cleaning your injectors similar to this? Sounds great but weather it actually does anything to improve/clean your engine, remains to be seen.

Cleaning injectors is proven and safe and is done off the car. Worthwhile doing imo. injectortune does them and "tunes" them to original flow rates

To clean injectors properly requires their removal and cleaning in an ultrasonic bath, then a flow test to ensure they are delivering fuel at the correct rate.

You can use something like STP Injector cleaner, which is simply poured into the fuel tank, but whether this method is anywhere near as effective is dubious.

As said above, modern fuel has cleaning additives in already, so adding some more isn't likely to make much difference, unless you're dealing with an engine that's been sat about unused for years.
