Hey guys I've got a question for you all....

Right,
I purchased a 2nd hand custom exhaust system (from the down pipe all the way down to the back box) a few months ago and managed to get it fitted yesterday, the only issue was that my mechanic phoned me up and said that my replacement exhaust system did not have a hole for the oxygen sensor on the downpipe where the original system i am replacing does?!? My last e30 was a 318i and I do not remember it having an oxygen sensor on the downpipe? My current e30 is only a 316i touring but the original system had a catalyt convertor?? Is this the reason for the oxygen sensor?? Will this cause my car to run worse in the long run? At the moment the car is running fine.....
Any info will be much appreciated.
Cheers

The 02 sensor, or lambda, is a very rudimentary feature in E30s, and the ECU doesn't really benefit from having it fitted. It's there if you have a cat fitted, but if you've deleted the cat you can delete the lambda with no effect to the performance of the car. You can also delete the carbon canister that you've got fitted as well.

Of course, your emissions are something else entirely, and your MOT man may have something to say about your lack of catalyser, but that's up to you. If you're really not sure, drill a hole in your new downpipe and have a boss welded in so that a lambda can be fitted.

Ok thanks for that info mate much much appreciated.
So Can i just leave lambda/02 sensor hanging where it is or should i just remove it all together?
Also where abouts is this carbon canister and what is its function?
My e30 is 1991 and according to my research i do not need a CAT for MOT... So that should be ok in that aspect i hope!!

The engine will be fine without a lambda sensor, as long as your air meter has a CO adjustment pot on it. Very late M40 engined tourings (supplied when lambda sensors, etc. were compulsory) didn't have the adjustment pot. fitted.
If this pot is fitted there will be two ends of a white/black wire under the bulkhead wiring cover which need plugging together to connect the pot. in circuit, so that the CO can be adjusted as it will no longer be lambda feedback controlled.
If your car is pre September '92, there will should be no MOT test problems, as I doubt the test computer will throw up that a CAT was originally fitted. If it is required to have a CAT, then make sure the engine number is unreadable.
Lambda sensor unplugs under the battery tray.
The carbon cannister can be left in place - it's nothing at all to do with the lambda sensor, but just another bit of emissions equipment.
It's not a testable item for MOT purposes, and can be removed if you want to. I've done this on many BMWs simply to tidy up under the bonnet and improve accessibility. Remove the canister and the electric valve, leave the electrical plug hanging, block off the pipe to the inlet manifold, and tuck the OPEN end of the hose from the back of the car inside the reinforcement structure for the strut turret.

Brian: any issue with removing the hardline for the evap and leaving the rubber link pipe at the fuel filter location?

Mine is fooked and I don't see the point in replacing it it all it does is vent to atmosphere :)

Sorry for the minihijack!
