my 316 keeps idling at about 1200rpm then every 5 seconds or so it drops down to about 400rpm and nearly stalls then returns to 1200rpm. Any ideas on what this could be guys?

No problem. Go through the list of things mentioned in the link systematically, and shout back if you still have troubles

Main things on the M40 to check are: Blue sensor, air-leaks anywhere, TPS under the Throttle Body must "click" as throttle is relaxed and the ICV needs to be cleaned out.
Basically I am just summarising what the Wiki link has to say.
