An M30 is basically a big M20, same management, similar valve train design etc... so faults are easy (ish) to trace.
Im getting low to mid 20 mpg with the B10 and it was probably about the same with the standard M30.

M30 V's 24v.:)
Ive had both running side by side for say the past 2 years, fair enough the 24v is in an E36 compact but it weighed in at 1260KG which pretty much E30 weight (my E30 weighed 1240kg while it was still M20)
IMO they are two totally different animals, 24v is smooth, light, refined and efficient and is a good engine (if looked after) but they need to be wound up before they get moving properly.
An M30 is a noisy old slugger, big cc with 2 valve head design, heavy, late 60's roots etc..But IMO they are more fun to drive on the road.
Power delivery on them is nuts, standard M30's make about 200 lb ft @ 1500-2k and you dont have to wait for the power to 'come on. It will pull out of a corner hard from 2k and rev right up to 6k with pretty much a constant wall of torque.

As for speed my totally standard M30 weighing 1309KG (car in sig) ran a 14.5 quarter mile at Santa pod 2 years ago, still had the massive 20KG dual mass fly fitted. 8O
Theo got similar times with his, iirc Zaust got 14.6 in his touring too.
if you are running it at York id aim for mid 14's.

Epic council activity Alex :D

love this pic

for fooks sake don't let mick behind the wheel of the M30 turd, being a 24v executive the torque curve could really scare him and cause irreversable damage to your seats :D

Had a proper poke about in the engine today, and the wiring is far from my standard, plenty of block connectors, multi coloured wires and tape.

A few things ive noticed is that the cars fuel light is on and showing 3/4 full so something a miss there.

Rev counter doesnt work

The starter does not work from the ignition however of a switch, which i dont want.

First picture.

can someone identify whats going on here. it looks like part of the engine loom should all this be cut?

Image

Inside the c101 plug thingy

Image

On the starter there is a yellow and black wire cut and then another one attached, is this the council starter switch

there is also a green and black one that been cut

Image

this is in the fuel injector wiring any idea

Image

should all these wires be here?

Image

the heater hoses havent even been connected.

where would these take the feed from

Image

more mess

Image

any idea what this connector is for and what the little hose with a screw in the end is suppose to be for

Image

the engine runs rough at idle, when i remove the oil cap the idle doesnt drop which suggests there is an air leak somewhere however i want to sort all the messy wiring out before i start pulling the engine apart, some of the electrical connections really dont look like they will last very long and are allready falling apart

Allready started removing some councilness from the engine bay

Some Morsels for it

That wiring is messy.

In your shoes id just get another loom rather than tackle that lot, cant understand why there are so many cut wires as an M30 will run plug & play you only need to cut two wires to get the rev counter working.
M20 looms work on these engines if its any help.

That hose with the screw in should attach to either the FPR or it plugs into the the smaller hose next to the large AFM to TB hose.

Small hose is part 13

Definitely get a new loom! The wiring was probably the easiest part of my 335i conversion.

Well you'd have to question the IQ of the chap, given that he decided to drop an M30 in, in the first place.. :)

You need an M30 loom, manual if possible but auto can be used if you swap the TPS plug. Make sure the loom you get is from around 88 to 92,later looms have a different C101 similar to M50's (which looks like what you have on now.)
M20 loom can be used but iirc some wires need lengthening.
Yes its fairly easy to swap over.

Btw the plug you mentioned earlier is nothing to worry about, im not sure but i think its for a lambda sensor which isnt really needed on these donks.
What number ECU do you have?

Here is a shot of the wires needed to make the m30 run the ones cut and tucked behind my finger are mainly unused auto loom ones, your car won't be exactly the same, as mine is a chromie but it gives you an idea. If it was me I would be binning that loom and going for an m30/20 one.
On another note, if that is the state of the electrics I would seriously check the state of the home made engine mounts.

will you ask mr topless if your going to see him for a front screen he has put by for me and i'll pay him no probs.

i'll pick the screen up when i drop your wheel off and i've got d'monds m52 fannymoulds to drop in to him on the scenic route .

so if you get the screen it will speed things up a knot winkeye
