Got a 53 plate Mondeo diesel with the more powerful 130ps engine, which has developed a loud 'wooshing'(?) sort of noise when under boost.

Browsing around, the hose from the intercooler to the egr valve seems to be a fairly common issue which can cause this sound - and is my prime suspect tbh as it's pretty mucky around the drivers side end of the intercooler (I'm assuming the egr is that side???).

Issue is, I can't see fook all down there and am having some back problems that are stopping me investigating much further at the mo!!

How would one normally get to this hose?? Or the intercooler or egr valve???
There's so little space and so many pipes!!!!

Almost looks like the front bumper might need to come off 8O

Any advice is welcome - and in the meantime I'm on ebay looking for a cheap haynes!!!!!

YES !

I had one of these turds on a 52 plate - the same 130bhp model.

Its almost certainly a split boost hose that runs between the EGR and intercooler.

I had to get it replaced on mine - its a dealer only part - about £45 I think.

Front bumper doesnt need to come off.

Easiest way is to pull the EGR valve off completely and clean it out at the same time - with the EGR valve out of the way you should be able to get at the other end of the hose.

If yours is the earlier engine ( No wires going to the EGR valve ) you can block it off with no ill effects.

To do a proper job also remove and clean out the manifold - dead easy but you'll probably need about 3 cans of carb cleaner to do a proper job and its VERY messy - put thick newspaper down before you start - the gunk that will come out of the EGR and manifold stains everything it touches.

try www.talkford.com - all you need to know is in there

EGR blanking plates can be had from ebay for about £3

HTH :D

Cheers matey - just got to identify the egr valve now - as I said, really can't see much in this engine bay and not really sure what the egr valve looks like!!!

Had a poke around on those forums and some people seem to have replaced that hose with a £10 silicone jobby off ebay, so I'll try and get it off and tape it up, while it's not too bad, and can then still use the motor while we source the part!!

Surprised I couldn't find any pics or instructions on the ford forums though - just everyone saying they've had to replace it!!!

Tbh, been running perfect other than that so I def won't be doing a 'proper job'!! Havent got time to do any more dismantling/cleaning than is strictly necessary!!!
If it was an E30, it'd get a bit more attention, but this is the business slag for carrying crap!!!

Shows the EGR valve bottom left of pic and you can see the top of the hose that is almost certainly fooked attached to it

EGR / manifold cleanup is definately worthwhile for better running and MPG

EGR blanking IF it is the mechanical ( not the electronic ) EGR will stop you having to do it again.

Also found with mine that it was quicker, more free revving and more economical after changing the fuel filter

All cheap and fairly easy jobs - just make sure you fill the new fuel filter with diesel before installing it as they are NOT self priming despite what some people say.

For a modern turd they arent too bad to work on - have you done the subframe bushes yet ?
