Guys, I've been offered a 944 Lux which is the 2.5 8v. The car is a very good price and I quite fancy it but am I going to get myself in a world of bother??? I'll just see evening or weekend use as I have a van for work.

What issues do these turds have?

Ta.

Early ( pre oval ) dashes crack up quite badly

Some of them have interiors which are almost pink
Belts & Balance shafts

Good cars though - I still want one

Something like this would do me :

I think it would be dissapointingly slow after your 320is.

Good fun and very capable cars though.
cheers,

I've had thoughts of 944's in the past, would have to drive one first though but I like the sound of a transaxle for a decent weight balance.

great cars, suffer the Porsche snobbery, but who cares! if you can afford one, try and get a decent S2, best allrounder of the bunch, not outright as quick as a turbo, but less trouble, cheaper and easier to find a good one at sensible money.
As mentioned above the belts can be expensive to replace, water pumps tend to go around the 80k mark and are expensive to replace, requires the belts to be removed.
Parts wise they are not as expensive as you would think, there is a good supply of specialists out there as well as breakers ect, official Porsche stuff can be £££.
As with most stuff, buy on condition. Drive a few before you buy one, however i dought you will be disapointed.

A 944 is only going to be a run about, something different for not alot of £.

S2 the 3.0? The 16v donks have balance shafts etc, that's why I'm leaning towards the Lux which is a 2.5 8v.

I thought even the 8v's had the balance shafts - IIRC Porsche felt these were necessary to retain smoothness due to 2500cc being at the top end of acceptable for a 4pot donk.

I may be talking bollocks though sorry - been a while since I looked into these turds :o:

exact same belt set-up on 8valve and 16valve, 2.5, 2.7 and 3.0lt.
some of the racers remove the balance belt set up, there is a little to be had from doing so, however the balance shaft set up is'nt very trouble-some, so no worries there.

Ah, in that case I'll investigate how much that is to get done. Thank you for the info'.

I'd avoid the 16v. They're a bit fartless and suffer expensive cam gear wear - although it has a Cam belt, a short chain links the two cams. A good early 2.5 is £1200 but the 2.7 8v is best all round.
