Very sorry to ask this question, but I have searched everywhere on this site and only found bits and pieces. I have a 318i Touring with a knackered engine and an E36 P reg 1.6 with a M43 lying around. Will this engine bolt straight in? Do I need to swap the engine and gearbox? Will the propshaft fit? and what else do I need to do or indeed what other bits should I swap at the same time (maybe the rack? why do people swap these??)
Many many thanks in advance.
Fitting a M43 Engine in my E30 Touring

I would have thought pretty much the same as the M42 swap. You'll need your M40 sump (upper/lower), engine mounts/brackets, exhaust manifold/downpipe (think these are the same on the M40/M43) and ECU (+EWS/Key/Ring Antenna if it has it)
Gearbox and prop stays as is, you'll need to check the spigot bearing size and maybe swap this over from the M40 too. Replace the flywheel/clutch if it is dualmass with the M40 one.
Wiring you'll need to change the X20 plug on the loom to a C101 to fit the car, wiring diagrams should be in other threads in this section.
Dipstick tube - on the M40 this is at the front of the block, you'll have a serpentine ancillary belt so this will need 'manipulated' to clear it (bent!) Also probably need to manipulate the PAS pipes.
Rack on the e36 is faster (less turns lock to lock) this is why people swap it, you'll need to make an adaptor as the splines are different on the e30 and some spacers.

I did M42 e36 conv so I'm not speaking from 1st hand but it shouldn't be too far off the mark

Thankyou so much!!!!!
I am making my contribution to do a picture by picture step by step for this which I will post so hope I can put something back into the community!

I tried a picture by picture, it's so hard to remember to photo things when you just want it done!
So much respect for xworks's rebuild thread in this aspect.

Just spent 15 hours learning about ews, I wonder if anyone has the wiring details for the ews module to the transponder and dme.
From memory, wiring in the EWS isn't anything to worry about.
The pin chart above is for an E36 M42 engine. There could be differences to the wiring of an M43.

EWS is simples, all you need is what's above.
It's an X20 connector so there shouldn't be much difference, all the major stuff is the same.
ETKs here: http://wedophones.com/Manuals/BMW/
Still worth checking against the ETK for the relevant years prior to connection. I checked mine against 4 different sources including some M50 swap wiring and they were mostly the same. Started 1st time and no loom fire

Yup, no problems with EWS when I wired in the S50, although I also added the connections to kill the starter.
Hopefully shouldn't be too much to differ on the X20, although as you say, its worth checking a couple times as there could be the odd different wire at different pins.
No loom smoke is always good
