Have you checked the seal round the front cam wheel cover. Might be worth have a listen with a tube for air leaks there.

Does the idle stay in the same rev range, ie going wub wub wub wub wub and the car rocking slightly.

Or do the revs rise up and down like this.

/\/\ this was my M30 a couple of years ago and it was the AFM at fault.

Thanks for the replies :thumb:

Compression test checked out fine
Not sure how to test AFM, will have search on how to do that
Not checked the cam cover seal, will do that
ICV resistances checked out fine

The engine will start straight away, splutter a bit around 500rpm, then pick upto about 1200 shortly, before dropping down to nearly stalling, and then back upto 1200. The classic sign of an airleak somewhere afaik?

Got 3 more days at work and then I'm off for Christmas so I can try and sort this out and get the f'ing thing MOT'd!

It will be quite a big air leak for it to do that, what happens when you run it with the ICV unplugged?

Ive got a link somewhere how to test the AFM ill post it up when i find it.

Although this only tests whether the ECU is getting the right signals, the flap could be too loose (or too tight like mine was)

Check out the rocker cover, I had a leak at the front causing me problems, and it was only noticable when I took it off.

Well, I haven't even lifted the bonnet of the car since my last post, just haven't got the time at the moment! Car is being booked into my dad's mate's garage in the next couple of weeks to get sorted and MOT'd so will hopefully finally be finished soon!

Latest on the car is the idle seems to have settled down a fair bit after being left running for a while, still slightly lumpy though. It apparently is backfiring now and again when revved, and thoughts are possibly a sticking injector leading it to overfuel. Anyone got any other ideas what could be causing this or does that sound like the problem?

What ECU are you using - the early 150 or the later 179?

The earlier one can be somewhat unreliable, due to the twin-PCB design.

Should have more news on it this week :) It's being looked at whenever there is a spare half hour in the workshop as I'm in no major rush to get it done (but I really can't wait to drive it!)

Took it for a quick drive today, still not running right, but once the engine clears itself it goes like fook  Lit up the back tyres in 2nd on part throttle where the road is a bit greasy, caught me by surprise a bit! I was impressed with how freely the engine will rev for such a big lump, guess the light flywheel makes a big difference :)

As long as the running issues don't mess up the emissions then there should be an MOT on it in the next week or so :D

Sounds good! I nearly bought some of those throttle bodies a few months back, but then thought it might be wise to get the car on the road first!

Went for MOT yesterday, nothing too major wrong with it although it didn't pass. Hydrocarbons obviously high due to the missfire, a few lights not working, handbrake not that good, and one of the front calipers needs freeing up a bit. So nearly there!

When I get a chance I'm going to get the injectors out and send them off for a refurb, and test the AFM and a few other bits.

How much over were the emissions? could you lean it out with the allen screw on the AFM?

Clockwise richens it up and anticlockwise will lean it off, if you have undone the screw till it comes out your next step is the spring in the AFM.

Pop the black plastic cap off and mark the cog so you can set it back to where it was originally, twist the cog to tighten the spring (ie making the flap harder to push open) iirc its anticlockwise to tighten it up on M30's, this will lean it off.
Id click it two notches and see what it does, take you ten minutes and cost you nowt. :)

Whats your list of things new/tested? ie Dizzy, leads, rotor, CPS, TPS etc....

I'm not sure, my dad took the car over for me. The high hydrocarbons are unburnt fuel because of the missfire, you can't really adjust anything, just need to sort the missfire :)

On my list to do is check AFM and TPS, and get the injectors recon'd. Dizzy cap/rotor arm are new, blue temp sensor and CPS are new, HT leads tested fine for resistance, plugs are new.

Nice bit of progress this week, the little bits and pieces (washers, bulbs etc) that needed doing for the MOT are sorted. Also I've taken the inlet manifold off (what a nightmare it is getting the bottom row of nuts off!) to fit new inlet manifold gaskets, and got the injectors out ready to be sent off for reconditioning.

Also fitted new front wheel bearings, ready to fit my WMS brake setup :)

New inlet manifold gaskets fitted, and manifold back on :) One of the old inlet manifold gaskets was a bit suspect as I think you could see an area where air had been getting in, hopefully that is the last thing needed to sort the running problems for good!

Injectors sent off this afternoon, hopefully they will be back by the weekend so I can get it running again, and fit the new brakes and LSD I've got, and then it is time for some trackdays!
