Hi,

I need to source a replacement power steering rack for my e30.

I phoned euro car parts and they asked whether it is an alloy or steel body that i require!

How can i tell whether i need alloy or steel?

My e30 is 1989 facelift car as in my avatar.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Matt

Go here: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do

Stick the last 7 figures of your VIN in the "Serial Number" box. Click "Search".

Then browse parts and go to STEERING. You will find the part number of your rack there.

Or lift the bonnet and look at the existing rack to see what it is made of.

Yes i check on the realoem site but part number doesn't help me identify whether i need steel or alloy. I've had a look but i cant tell by looking at it which one i have

You can't tell the difference between alloy and steel?

ECF should be able to tell you what you need if you give them the BMW part number.

Well looks like a steel body around the rack if that's what they are referring to but I just wanted to be sure :)
